- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/1/) — Some comes from elsewhere: the government helps with benefits such as Universal Credit and child benefit, and sometimes money is left in a will or a bonus arrives.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/2/) — Before pay reaches the bank, some is taken off as tax for the government, and some is put away into a pension for old age.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/3/) — Picture a terraced house in Manchester on the last Friday of the month: Mum checks her phone, smiles "It's payday, let's get a takeaway", and the kids cheer, because all week the answer to treats was "wait till payday".
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/5/) — Wages are usually paid by the hour or the week, so more hours means more pay; a salary is a fixed amount for the year, split into monthly payments.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/6/) — Payday is the day pay arrives in the bank, often once a month, so money is usually lowest just before it.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/7/) — Many people are paid early in December, before Christmas, so January feels very long with the money already spent.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/8/) — Pocket money is a small regular amount given to children to practise choosing, saving and making mistakes with money.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/9/) — Some families pay children for extra jobs, like washing the car, but tidying your own room is just part of living together.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/10/) — Benefits are money the government pays to people who need help, such as those out of work, ill, caring for someone or on low pay; Universal Credit is the main one in the UK.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/11/) — Benefits are paid for by everyone's taxes as a safety net, and many families who work get some help too.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/12/) — Child benefit is a small regular payment from the government to families with children, to help with things like shoes and food.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/13/) — An inheritance is money or belongings left by someone who has died, as written in their will.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/14/) — Income tax is money taken from earnings for the government; people who earn more pay more, but "half of it goes to the taxman" is usually an exaggeration.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/15/) — Taxes pay for schools, the NHS, roads, police and benefits.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/16/) — National Insurance is another amount taken from pay; paying it in during working life gives people the right to a state pension when they are old.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/17/) — A pension is money saved during working life, often with the employer adding some, to live on after retiring; the state also pays a pension to most older people.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/5-where-money-comes-from/18/) — A bonus is extra money on top of normal pay, for doing well or because the company had a good year; it is not guaranteed.
