- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/0/) — Every corner of the world built its own instruments from what was at hand: gourds, termite-hollowed branches, bamboo, old oil drums, and they carry the stories of the people who play them.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/1/) — Picture a world music fair: a Ukrainian bandura with dozens of strings, a Chinese erhu with only two, an Indian sitar with strings nobody touches that still hum, a West African kora that is half harp, half lute, and a didgeridoo droning without a pause for breath.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/2/) — The trick is not to squeeze new things into old boxes: the kora is not "a guitar or a harp", the guzheng is not "a sideways piano", and bagpipes are not only Scottish.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/3/) — Fewer strings does not mean easier, drums can change their pitch, and a whole continent like Africa, with 54 countries, is never "just drums".
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/5/) — The bandura is a Ukrainian plucked string instrument; modern concert banduras have around 55 to 65 strings.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/6/) — The bandura was played by kobzars, wandering singers of stories and songs; historians have documented that many kobzars were persecuted in the Soviet Union in the 1930s.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/7/) — The erhu is a Chinese bowed instrument with two strings; the bow hair passes between the strings, and it can sound very like a human voice.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/8/) — The sitar has sympathetic strings that are not plucked but vibrate by themselves when matching notes are played; Ravi Shankar made it famous worldwide, and George Harrison of the Beatles learned from him.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/9/) — The kora is a West African instrument with 21 strings, made from a large gourd covered in skin, often called a harp-lute, and traditionally played by griots, who keep history through song.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/10/) — The didgeridoo comes from Aboriginal Australians of northern Australia, traditionally made from a branch hollowed by termites; skilled players use circular breathing.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/11/) — Circular breathing means breathing in through the nose while pushing out air stored in the cheeks, so the sound never stops.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/12/) — Many places have bagpipes: Scotland, Ireland's uilleann pipes, the gaita of Galicia in Spain and the gaida of Bulgaria.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/13/) — The tabla is a pair of Indian hand drums; pressing the skin while striking it changes the pitch.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/14/) — The steel pan was developed in Trinidad and Tobago in the 20th century from oil drums and is its national instrument.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/15/) — The guzheng is a Chinese plucked zither with strings over movable bridges, played in China for over 2,000 years.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/16/) — African music includes drums such as the djembe, string instruments like the kora, thumb pianos like the mbira of southern Africa, and many singing styles.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/10-instruments-of-the-world-bandura-erhu-sitar-kora-didgeridoo/17/) — The trembita is a long wooden horn of the Hutsuls in the Ukrainian Carpathians, often around 3 metres or more, used for signals in the mountains and at ceremonies; the Swiss alphorn is a similar mountain horn.
