- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/0/) — Different paints behave differently: watercolour is thin and spreads in wet paper, acrylic is plastic-based and dries in minutes, and oil paint dries slowly so painters can blend it smoothly for days.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/1/) — Different brushes do different jobs: big flat ones for skies and backgrounds, small round ones for details, so painters usually start big and finish small.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/2/) — Picture Hannah's watercolour sky bleeding into the sea: she panics, but that spreading is often the most beautiful bit, and many painters say "happy accidents" (a phrase made famous by the TV painter Bob Ross) give them ideas.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/3/) — The other half of painting is knowing when to stop, asking before you paint on walls, and dressing for mess, because dried acrylic will not wash out of your school jumper.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/4/) — People say it their way: "trash" means rubbish, "it's a vibe" is a joke for "interesting", and "kiddo" is a friendly word for a child.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/5/) — Big flat brushes suit skies and backgrounds; small round brushes with a pointed tip suit details.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/6/) — Watercolour is thin paint mixed with water; painting on wet paper so colours spread is called wet-on-wet, and waiting for paint to dry stops the bleeding.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/7/) — Watercolour can sometimes be lifted with a tissue, and spills can be turned into clouds or water.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/8/) — Oil paint is pigment mixed with oil, often linseed oil; it dries slowly, so painters could blend smoothly.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/9/) — A clear varnish protects an oil painting, but it yellows over time; restorers, experts who carefully clean old art, can reveal bright colours under old varnish and dirt.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/10/) — A mural is a big planned painting on a wall; without permission painting on walls is damage, even at home.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/11/) — Acrylic paint dries in minutes and cleans with water while wet; it is the usual paint in schools, and many famous modern artists used it.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/12/) — Very thick paint that sticks out from the canvas is called impasto; it can be done with oil paint or with acrylic, which dries much faster.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/13/) — Loose brushwork, holding the brush further from the bristles, often makes paintings look more alive.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/14/) — Pysanky are Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated with wax and dye, with patterns that carry meanings like the sun, wheat or waves; there is a pysanka museum in Kolomyia shaped like a giant egg.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/15/) — Overworking means adding too much until the picture gets muddy; painters step back and look from a distance.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/14-painting-paints-brushes-mess-and-mistakes/16/) — Acrylic becomes plastic when dry and does not wash out easily, so artists wear old clothes or aprons.
