Lesson 24 of the arts course of Mova's primary school: 14 sentences, each with its syntax tree and pragmatics. The lessons are written for Mova, and their agreed trees are part of Mova corpus 0.4 (CC BY-SA 4.0). - [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/0/) — Turn the sound off during an action scene and it suddenly looks small and a bit silly; turn it back on and the same pictures feel huge, because sound and music do half the work.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/1/) — Most film sounds are not recorded with the pictures: footsteps, punches and rustling coats are often added later by Foley artists, who stomp on gravel or snap celery in a studio while watching the screen.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/2/) — Voices are often added later too: a grown-up can voice a child or a dragon, and the same cartoon gets new voices in each language, which is called dubbing.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/3/) — Music tells you what to feel: put happy music under a scary scene and it turns funny, put two slow, low notes under calm water and suddenly you are scared of sharks.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/4/) — People say it their own way: "bruh" is a friendly "come on, mate", "cringe" means embarrassing, and "mad" in Britain means amazing or crazy.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/5/) — Voice actors can sound much younger or older than they are, and many children's voices in cartoons are done by adults.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/6/) — Foley artists make everyday sounds like footsteps and rustling in a studio and match them to the film.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/7/) — Film music is usually written specially for the film by a composer: John Williams wrote the Jaws music in 1975; its two notes, slow and then faster, make people feel danger coming.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/8/) — Dubbing means recording new voices in another language; some countries prefer subtitles, the written words at the bottom of the screen.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/9/) — Sound designers make and mix many layers of sound so a scene feels bigger, scarier or funnier.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/11/) — In some films, especially older musicals, a different singer recorded the songs for the actor; today many actors sing for themselves.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/12/) — Your recorded voice sounds strange to you because when you speak you also hear yourself through the bones of your head, which makes it sound deeper.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/13/) — Cinemas can be very loud; covering your ears or using earplugs is fine, and some cinemas have "relaxed screenings", with quieter sound and the lights not fully off.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/24-voices-sound-and-music-in-films-and-cartoons/14/) — The same pictures with different music can feel scary, sad or funny.
