- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/0/) — This olympiad block mixes the art lessons into puzzles: chains of colour mixing, putting famous paintings in order of time, counting on a drawing grid, and catching myths about art and buildings.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/1/) — Colour chains need two steps: first work out what a mix makes, then use the colour wheel, where opposite colours are complementary: red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/2/) — Date puzzles use simple sums: if Van Gogh was born in 1853 and painted The Starry Night in 1889, he was 36 then, and putting paintings in order needs only their years side by side.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/3/) — Picture Dad at the Louvre saying, "We'll see the whole lot before lunch, easy." That is hyperbole of a kind: no one can see everything in one day, and tired legs and eyes have a name, museum fatigue.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/4/) — People react in their own words: "mid" means so-so, "lowkey" means a bit or quietly, an Australian "heaps" means lots, and a Scottish "dreich" means grey and gloomy weather.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/5/) — Painters' primary colours are red, yellow and blue; the secondary colours green, orange and purple are made by mixing two of them, and mixing complementary colours gives a muddy brown or grey.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/6/) — Adding white to a colour makes a lighter tint, and adding black makes a darker shade.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/7/) — Dates of famous works: the Mona Lisa, early 1500s; the Sistine Chapel ceiling, 1508 to 1512; Girl with a Pearl Earring, around 1665; The Great Wave, around 1831; The Starry Night, 1889; The Scream, from 1893; Guernica, 1937.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/8/) — Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 and died in 1890 aged 37; he sold very few paintings, and his fame grew after his death.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/9/) — The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai is a woodblock print, so many copies were made from the carved blocks.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/10/) — The rule of thirds splits a picture with two lines across and two lines down into a grid of 9 boxes, with 4 points where the lines cross.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/11/) — On a real head the eyes sit about halfway down; in perspective far things look smaller, and parallel lines seem to meet at a vanishing point.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/12/) — The Mona Lisa is about 77 centimetres tall and 53 centimetres wide; Guernica is almost 8 metres wide.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/13/) — Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling standing on a scaffold and bending his head back, not lying down.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/14/) — The Great Wall of China is very long but only about as wide as a road, so it cannot be seen from the Moon with the naked eye.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/15/) — Red-green colour blindness affects about 1 in 12 men of European descent.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/arts/42-olympiad-picture-puzzles/16/) — There is no rule that changing 30 percent of someone's picture makes it yours; what matters is whether the original can still be recognised.
