- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/0/) — On a misty autumn morning the garden is full of spider webs shining with dew, each one spun from silk that comes out of little nozzles called spinnerets at the back of the spider.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/1/) — The spider waits in a corner with one foot on a thread, and when a fly hits the web it feels the shaking, like someone feeling a phone buzz in their pocket.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/2/) — Lift a log or a stone and a whole hidden town scurries away: grey woodlice, which are cousins of crabs, fast hunting centipedes, slow millipedes that curl into a coil, and shiny beetles.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/3/) — Most of these minibeasts eat dead leaves and rotting wood, so they are the garden's recycling team, turning old plants back into soil.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/4/) — A spider has eight legs and is not an insect, a woodlouse has fourteen legs, and centipedes and millipedes have many more, so counting legs is the quickest way to tell them apart.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/5/) — Spiders make silk in their bodies and spin it out of spinnerets; they make different silks for different jobs, such as sticky threads, strong frame threads and egg sacs.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/6/) — A garden spider often waits in a corner of its web holding a signal thread, and feels the web shake when an insect is caught.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/7/) — Many spiders eat their old web before building a new one, to reuse the protein in the silk.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/8/) — A spider in the bath has usually fallen in and cannot climb out, because the sides are too smooth; it did not come up the plughole.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/9/) — The idea that people swallow spiders in their sleep is a myth; a sleeping person breathes, snores and has a beating heart, and those vibrations warn spiders away.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/10/) — In autumn many house spiders run across the floor because the males are wandering in search of females.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/11/) — Woodlice need damp places and hide under logs and stones; they are crustaceans, related to crabs and shrimps, not insects.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/12/) — Centipedes are fast hunters with one pair of legs on each body segment and venom claws to catch insects.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/13/) — Millipedes are slow, eat dead plants, have two pairs of legs on most body segments, and curl into a tight coil to protect themselves.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/14/) — Beetles are insects with six legs; beetles that live under stones help to break down dead plants and animals.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/15/) — A log pile in a corner of the garden is a mini habitat that shelters many minibeasts, and frogs and hedgehogs come to hunt there.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/16/) — A spider has eight legs and two body parts, while an insect has six legs and three body parts; a woodlouse has fourteen legs.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/220-spiders-and-other-minibeasts-under-logs-and-stones/17/) — Despite their name, no centipede has exactly one hundred legs, and most millipedes have far fewer than a thousand.
