- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/0/) — A farm's year turns with the seasons.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/1/) — In late winter and spring the farmer stays up all night in the lambing shed, because ewes often have twins and some lambs get stuck or are born weak.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/2/) — Within about half an hour a healthy lamb is standing and drinking.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/3/) — In early summer the sheep are sheared, and in June the grass is cut, dried in the sun, turned and baled as hay, or wrapped airtight in black plastic so it pickles into silage.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/4/) — Make hay while the sun shines, because wet hay goes mouldy.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/6/) — In winter the cows live in big sheds, eating the hay and silage saved in summer, and the muck from the sheds goes back on the fields in spring.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/7/) — So nothing is wasted: summer grass becomes winter food, winter muck becomes spring fertiliser, and the next year starts again.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/9/) — A lamb whose mother has no milk is fed by bottle and then follows people around; a spare lamb can be given to a ewe that lost hers if it is rubbed with her lamb's smell.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/10/) — Sheep are sheared in early summer, a good shearer taking about two minutes per sheep, because most sheep are bred to keep growing wool and would get too hot and dirty.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/11/) — In 2015 a runaway sheep in Australia named Chris was found with a fleece weighing about 40 kilograms.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/12/) — Haymaking is cutting grass, drying it in the sun, turning it and baling it for winter; wet hay goes mouldy, and damp hay packed in a barn can get hot and even catch fire.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/13/) — Silage is grass wrapped up airtight so bacteria turn its sugars into acid and pickle it, keeping it fresh for months, and cows love it.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/14/) — Straw is the dry stalks left after grain is harvested and is used for bedding, while hay is dried grass used as food; straw has very little food value.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/15/) — In autumn farmers plough and sow winter wheat or barley, and gulls and rooks follow the plough to snatch worms and grubs.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/16/) — Changing the crop in each field from year to year is called crop rotation and keeps the soil healthy.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/17/) — In winter many cows live indoors eating hay and silage because fields are muddy and grass hardly grows, and a milking cow can drink about 50 to 100 litres of water a day.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/18/) — Farmers spread manure and slurry, a runny mix of muck and water, on fields as fertiliser, but too much washed into rivers harms fish, so there are rules about when to spread it.
- [19](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/349-a-year-on-a-farm-lambing-haymaking-harvest-and-winter-feeding/19/) — Farms have dangers such as tractors, bulls, cows with calves and deep slurry pits; the Countryside Code asks people to leave gates as they found them and keep dogs under control.
