- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/1/) — Mud carried by the great river piles up at its mouth, so this delta builds new land into the sea year after year.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/2/) — Here a line of great white pelicans swims forward in a horseshoe, drives fish into shallow water, then all the heads dip at once.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/3/) — A pelican's pouch scoops up about 10 litres of water, like a bucket, which it drains before swallowing the fish.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/5/) — Ancient sturgeons with bony plates swim up the Danube, and small big-headed gobies cling to rocks with a sucker; gobies even travelled in ships' water tanks to America's Great Lakes.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/7/) — The delta is home to hundreds of kinds of birds, fish and frogs.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/8/) — Great white pelicans fish as a team, driving fish into shallow water and dipping their heads at the same moment; the rare Dalmatian pelican, the biggest pelican, also nests there.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/9/) — A pelican's pouch can hold about 10 litres of water; it drains the water out of the sides of the bill and swallows the fish, and pelicans do not fly about carrying fish in the pouch.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/10/) — A pelican has four toes on each foot, all joined by webbing, while a duck has three webbed toes and one free toe; pelicans take off by running along the water slapping these big feet.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/11/) — The Black Sea has three kinds: the bottlenose dolphin, the common dolphin and the harbour porpoise, which has a blunt face, not a beak.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/12/) — Black Sea dolphins were hunted for oil and meat until hunting was banned, in the Soviet Union in 1966.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/14/) — Dolphins rely on sound to hunt and to talk, so loud noise can hurt or confuse them.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/15/) — Below about 150 to 200 metres the Black Sea has almost no oxygen and is full of a gas that smells of rotten eggs, and shipwrecks over 2,000 years old have been found there almost whole because no worms eat the wood.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/16/) — Sturgeons are ancient fish that have changed little since the age of dinosaurs; the beluga sturgeon can live over 100 years and grow longer than a car, but overfishing for their eggs and meat and dams blocking their rivers have made them rare.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/17/) — A sturgeon has five rows of bony plates along its body and four whiskers under its snout to feel for food.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/18/) — Gobies are small bottom fish of the Black and Azov seas whose front belly fins form a sucker; Berdiansk has a monument to the goby, the Goby Breadwinner, that fed people in hard years.
- [19](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/biology/374-ukraine-s-waters-danube-delta-pelicans-black-sea-dolphins-sturgeon-and-gobies/19/) — Ships carry water in tanks to keep steady when lightly loaded, and round gobies travelled in these tanks to faraway ports and spread into the Great Lakes of North America, where they eat local fish eggs and push local fish out.
