- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/0/) — Alice is sitting on a grassy bank next to her big sister on a hot, sleepy day, bored stiff, because her sister's book has no pictures and no talking in it.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/2/) — Burning with curiosity, Alice dashes after him and jumps down a rabbit-hole without once thinking how she will get out again.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/3/) — The hole turns into a very deep well, and she falls so slowly that she can look at shelves and cupboards, grab a jar, chatter about the centre of the Earth and the people on the other side of the world, and nearly fall asleep thinking about her cat Dinah.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/4/) — Then, thump! thump! she lands on a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall is over: a lazy beginning that suddenly turns into a wild, dreamy adventure.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/5/) — Alice thinks: "and what is the use of a book," "without pictures or conversations?"; "conversations" here means characters talking to each other.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/6/) — The hot day made her feel "very sleepy and stupid", so she could hardly make up her mind about making a daisy-chain.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/7/) — The White Rabbit has pink eyes and says "Oh dear!
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/8/) — I shall be late!"
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/9/) — Alice did not find a talking rabbit strange at the time; what made her start to her feet was the Rabbit taking "a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket"; a waistcoat is a sleeveless jacket worn over a shirt.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/10/) — Only later "it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this"; at the time a talking rabbit seemed quite natural.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/11/) — She followed it into a large rabbit-hole under the hedge, "never once considering how in the world she was to get out again".
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/12/) — The hole went straight like a tunnel and then dipped suddenly down into a very deep well.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/13/) — The sides of the well were filled with cupboards and book-shelves, with maps and pictures hung on pegs.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/14/) — Alice took a jar labelled "ORANGE MARMALADE" from a shelf; it was empty, and she put it into a cupboard because she did not want to kill somebody underneath by dropping it.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/15/) — She joked that after such a fall she would think nothing of tumbling downstairs, and would not say anything about it "even if I fell off the top of the house" (which was true, because such a fall would hurt her badly).
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/16/) — Alice guessed she was near the centre of the earth, "four thousand miles down", and said "Latitude" and "Longitude" without knowing what they meant, because they were "nice grand words to say".
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/17/) — She wondered if she would fall right through the earth and come out among people walking upside down and called them "the Antipathies"; she meant the Antipodes, the people on the opposite side of the world, while an antipathy is a strong dislike.
- [19](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/19/) — Dinah is Alice's cat; Alice hoped someone would remember Dinah's saucer of milk at tea-time, and said there were no mice in the air, but Dinah might catch a bat, which is "very like a mouse".
- [20](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/20/) — Sleepy, Alice kept asking "Do cats eat bats?" and sometimes "Do bats eat cats?", because she could not answer either question, so the order did not matter; then she began to doze and dreamed she was walking hand in hand with Dinah.
- [21](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/21/) — Twice in this part a paragraph begins "Down, down, down." to show how long the fall goes on.
- [22](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/22/) — She landed on "a heap of sticks and dry leaves" and "was not a bit hurt".
- [23](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/1-alice-ch1-part1-down-the-rabbit-hole/23/) — Old words in today's English: "presently" = soon after, "fancy" = just imagine, "to-night" = tonight, "I should think" = I expect.
