- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/1/) — At last he suggests a rest on some tree-stumps by a copse (a small wood) — and the sob the Mole has been holding back bursts out, then another and another, until he is crying openly.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/2/) — Between sobs it all comes out: his shabby little home, how he forgot it, how he smelt it on the road, how the Rat wouldn't turn back.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/3/) — The Rat says nothing for a while, just pats his shoulder.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/4/) — Then he mutters: «What a pig I have been!
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/5/) — A pig—that's me!»
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/6/) — When the sobs calm down, the Rat simply gets up and walks back the way they came.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/7/) — «We're going to find that home of yours,» he says.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/8/) — The Mole protests — too late, too dark, and the Rat's supper!
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/9/) — «Hang River Bank, and supper too!» says the Rat, and takes his arm.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/10/) — Near the spot, the Rat lets go and waits.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/11/) — The Mole's nose quivers… a quick run, a stop, a try back, then a sure advance — over a ditch, through a hedge, across a field, and down a tunnel.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/13/) — The Rat chatters «about what they would do when they got back» — «how jolly a fire of logs in the parlour would be» — «never noticing his companion's silence and distressful state of mind».
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/14/) — The Rat: «Look here, Mole old chap, you seem dead tired.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/15/) — No talk left in you, and your feet dragging like lead.» (Dead tired = very tired; feet like lead = feet heavy as metal.)
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/16/) — «The sob he had fought with so long refused to be beaten … poor Mole at last gave up the struggle, and cried freely and helplessly and openly».
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/17/) — The Mole: «I know it's a—shabby, dingy little place … not like—your cosy quarters—or Toad's beautiful hall—or Badger's great house—but it was my own little home—and I was fond of it».
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/18/) — «We might have just gone and had one look at it, Ratty—only one look—it was close by—but you wouldn't turn back, Ratty, you wouldn't turn back!»
- [20](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/20/) — What a pig I have been!
- [21](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/21/) — A pig—that's me!
- [22](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/22/) — Just a pig—a plain pig!» (Here «pig» means a selfish, thoughtless person.)
- [23](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/23/) — He waits till «sniffs were frequent and sobs only intermittent» (intermittent = coming now and then), then says «carelessly» that they'd better be getting on, and sets off the way they came.
- [24](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/24/) — «Wherever are you (hic) going to (hic), Ratty?» — the Mole still has the hiccups from crying.
- [25](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/25/) — The Rat: «We're going to find that home of yours, old fellow … we shall want your nose.»
- [26](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/26/) — The Mole: «It's too late, and too dark, and the place is too far off, and the snow's coming!» The Rat: «Hang River Bank, and supper too! … I'm going to find this place now, if I stay out all night.»
- [27](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/27/) — Near the spot the Rat feels «a faint sort of electric thrill» through his arm.
- [28](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/28/) — «The signals were coming through!» Then: «a short, quick run forward—a fault—a check—a try back; and then a slow, steady, confident advance» (words from hunting dogs following a scent).
- [29](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/29/) — The Mole moves «with something of the air of a sleep-walker», crosses a dry ditch, scrambles through a hedge, crosses a field, and dives down a tunnel.
- [30](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/30/) — The front door has «“Mole End” painted, in Gothic lettering, over the bell-pull» (Gothic lettering = old-fashioned, pointed letters).
- [31](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/31/) — The forecourt has a garden-seat, a roller (the Mole hates his ground «kicked up» into little runs), ferns in wire baskets, and plaster statues of «Garibaldi, and the infant Samuel, and Queen Victoria, and other heroes of modern Italy» — a joke, because only Garibaldi was an Italian hero.
- [32](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/42-willows-ch5-part2-mole-end/32/) — There is a skittle-alley (skittles = a game like bowling), and a little pond with gold-fish, a cockle-shell border, and in its middle a little pile of more cockle-shells topped by «a large silvered glass ball that reflected everything all wrong and had a very pleasing effect».
