- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/0/) — The Sea Rat goes on with his voyage: down the coast of Italy to Palermo and happy weeks with friends in Sicily, then on to Sardinia and Corsica; he never sticks too long to one ship.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/1/) — When the Water Rat asks whether it isn't hot down in the ship's hold, the Sea Rat winks: «The captain's cabin's good enough for me» — he rides along as a guest, not as a hard-working sailor.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/2/) — At Alassio he watched wine-casks tied in a long line pulled ashore «like a mile of porpoises»; he rested in the olive-woods above the blue sea, and at Marseilles he feasted with old shipmates and still dreams of its shellfish.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/4/) — Over lunch the Sea Rat tells the rest: the ports of Portugal and France, the harbours of Cornwall and Devon, and the last stormy quay where the first hints of spring sent him inland to try a quiet farm — which the Water Rat doesn't want to hear about at all.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/7/) — Next he took «a ship that was trading to Sardinia and Corsica», glad «to feel the fresh breeze and the sea-spray in my face once more».
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/8/) — The Water Rat asks if it is «very hot and stuffy, down in the — hold» (the hold is the inside of a ship where the cargo goes).
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/10/) — «It's a hard life, by all accounts,» says the Water Rat.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/12/) — From Corsica a ship carried wine to the mainland; at Alassio (a little town on the Italian coast) they «hove» (threw) the wine-casks overboard, «tied one to the other by a long line», and the crew rowed ashore singing, pulling «the long bobbing procession of casks, like a mile of porpoises».
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/14/) — Then he took «to the great olive-woods for a spell and a rest», «stretched high on the hillside with the blue Mediterranean far below me».
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/15/) — At Marseilles (a big port in the south of France) he met old shipmates; «sometimes I dream of the shell-fish of Marseilles, and wake up crying!»
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/16/) — The «polite Water Rat» invites him to lunch; the Sea Rat asks him to bring it outside: «I am none too fond of going under hatches» (indoors, below deck), and indoors «it is a hundred to one that I shall presently fall asleep».
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/17/) — The Rat packs «a yard of long French bread, a sausage out of which the garlic sang, some cheese which lay down and cried, and a long-necked straw-covered flask wherein lay bottled sunshine shed and garnered on far Southern slopes»: jokes for a very garlicky sausage, a ripe runny cheese, and wine (a grown-ups' drink) from sunny southern vineyards.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/18/) — He chooses these «remembering the stranger's origin and preferences», and «blushed for pleasure at the old seaman's commendations» (praise).
- [19](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/59-willows-ch9-part4-lunch-by-the-road/19/) — The voyage goes on «from port to port of Spain», to «Lisbon, Oporto, and Bordeaux»: Lisbon and Oporto are really in Portugal, and Bordeaux is in France.
