- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/0/) — After lunch the Sea Rat leans close, his sea-grey eyes and the red glow of his glass holding the Water Rat «body and soul»; his talk seems to turn into sailors' songs, wind, gulls and waves, until the Rat can hear and see nothing else.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/1/) — Standing up, the Sea Rat tells of the little grey harbour town where he will wait for the right ship, pointing South, and then softly invites him: «And you, you will come too, young brother» — just bang the door behind you and step out.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/2/) — The voice fades, the stranger becomes a speck on the road, and the Rat, like a sleep-walker, packs a satchel, takes a stick and steps out of his door — just as the Mole arrives.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/3/) — The Mole sees that his friend's eyes have turned a streaked, shifting grey — «not his friend's eyes» — and drags him inside and holds him down; the Rat struggles, then shivers, sobs and falls asleep, while the Mole locks the satchel away.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/4/) — When the Rat wakes, his eyes are brown again but he is flat and sad; the tactful Mole chats about the harvest, apples and cosy winter, then leaves a pencil and paper by him, and soon the Rat is scribbling poetry: the cure has begun.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/8/) — The Rat heard of «deep-sea fishings», «the tall bows of the great liner taking shape overhead through the fog», and «the merry home-coming» to «red-curtained windows».
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/11/) — «And you, you will come too, young brother; for the days pass, and never return, and the South still waits for you.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/12/) — Take the Adventure, heed the call, now ere the irrevocable moment passes!» (ere = before; irrevocable = that can never be taken back).
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/14/) — «I will linger, and look back; and at last I will surely see you coming, eager and light-hearted, with all the South in your face!»
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/15/) — The voice «died away and ceased as an insect's tiny trumpet dwindles swiftly into silence», and the Rat saw «but a distant speck on the white surface of the road».
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/16/) — «Mechanically» (like a machine, without thinking) the Rat repacked the basket, went home, put «a few small necessaries and special treasures» in a satchel, chose «a stout stick for his wayfaring», and stepped out «just as the Mole appeared at the door».
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/17/) — «Going South, with the rest of them,» he murmured, «Seawards first and then on shipboard, and so to the shores that are calling me!»
- [20](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/20/) — The Mole talked «casually» of the harvest, «the reddening apples», «the browning nuts», «jams and preserves and the distilling of cordials» (sweet fruit drinks), and then of midwinter, «and then he became simply lyrical» (spoke like a poem).
- [21](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/21/) — The «tactful Mole» brought a pencil and paper: «It's quite a long time since you did any poetry»; later the Rat was «scribbling and sucking the top of his pencil», and «it was joy to the Mole to know that the cure had at least begun».
- [22](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/books/60-willows-ch9-part5-the-call-and-the-cure/22/) — Talk in this lesson: «bairn» (Scotland) = child; «mate» = friend; «lowkey» = a bit; «toque» (Canada) = woolly hat; «eh» (Canada) = right?
