- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/0/) — Reading and spelling are the same skill going in two directions.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/1/) — Reading is blending: you see «stop», say the sounds /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/ and push them together into the word.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/2/) — Spelling is segmenting: you hear «frog», tap one finger for each sound, f-r-o-g, and write a letter or a letter team for each tap.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/3/) — The sounds must be short and clipped.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/4/) — Noah says «suh-tuh-o-puh» and gets «sutop», a word that does not exist, because every «uh» is an extra sound that is not in the word.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/6/) — Long words are read in chunks called syllables, the beats you can clap: sand-wich, pic-nic, fan-tas-tic.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/7/) — You blend each chunk, then glue the chunks together.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/9/) — In England, Year 1 children (about six years old) do the phonics screening check: they read 40 words to a teacher, half real and half made-up.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/11/) — It is a check to find who needs help, not a pass or fail for life; anyone who misses it gets help and takes it again in Year 2.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/12/) — Reading the words aloud is not the same as understanding them.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/13/) — A boy can read every word of a story and still not know what happened, so grown-ups ask «Who was in it?
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/14/) — What happened?» after each page.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/15/) — And mistakes like reading «shop» as «sop» are normal: the child read the s and missed its partner h.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/16/) — Blending is pushing sounds together to read a word; segmenting is splitting a word into its sounds to spell it.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/18/) — Sound buttons are dots under the letters, one for each sound; a letter team such as sh gets one button.
- [19](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/19/) — A syllable is a beat in a word with one vowel sound; long words are read chunk by chunk, sand-wich.
- [20](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/20/) — In England, the Year 1 phonics screening check asks a child to read 40 words to a teacher, some real and some made-up.
- [21](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/21/) — A child who does not reach the expected mark gets extra help and takes the check again in Year 2.
- [22](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/22/) — Accurate decoding means reading every sound in order; guessing means saying a word that just looks similar.
- [23](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/23/) — Slow sounding-out is a normal early stage; re-reading the same easy book builds speed until words are known at a glance.
- [24](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/24/) — Decoding (turning letters into words) and comprehension (understanding what you read) are two different skills.
- [25](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/25/) — A decodable book uses only the sounds a child has already been taught.
- [27](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/english/2-blending-segmenting-and-the-year-1-check/27/) — Praise for every answer, right or wrong, teaches nothing; good feedback says what was right and gently fixes what was wrong.
