- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/0/) — At the till you pay, and if you gave more than the price, you get change back; doing the sum yourself means you always pay the right amount.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/1/) — The fastest way to check change is to count up from the price: Jake pays £10 for a £3.50 toy, so £3.50 + 50p = £4, + £1 = £5, + £5 = £10, and his change is 50p + £1 + £5 = £6.50.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/2/) — Add your prices before you get to the till: a £1.20 drink and 85p crisps make £2.05, which is 5p more than £2, so rounding to "about £1.20 + about 90p" warns you early.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/3/) — People make mistakes, so be honest both ways: if the new lad gives you £1 too much change, say so, and if the till charges more than the shelf says, point it out politely.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/4/) — Change is the money you get back when you pay more than the price.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/5/) — Counting up from the price to the money you gave is a quick way to check change.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/6/) — To estimate is to make a quick rough guess, for example by rounding prices before adding them.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/7/) — If you get too much change, the honest thing is to say so; the worker may have to make up the missing money.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/8/) — Sometimes the shelf price and the till price do not match; you can politely point it out and shops usually fix it.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/9/) — Being charged too much is called being overcharged.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/10/) — To find how many things you can afford, see how many times the price fits into your money; what is left is your change.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/11/) — Different shops charge different prices for the same thing; checking a few shops is called shopping around.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/12/) — Giving a few extra coins so the change comes out round, like £1.10 for a 60p lolly, means fewer coins for everyone.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/13/) — Prices go up slowly over the years; this is called inflation, which is why grown-ups remember cheaper prices.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/14/) — Market sellers often say a rounded price out loud, so it is worth doing the sum yourself.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/11-prices-and-change-at-the-till/15/) — "Fair cop" is British slang for admitting you were caught out fairly.
