- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/0/) — To compare a small pack and a big pack fairly, work out the price for the same amount, called the unit price: four small 250 ml juices at 50p make a litre for £2, but the 1 litre bottle is £1.60, so the big one saves 40p a litre.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/1/) — Big is not always cheaper: a 100 g pack for £1 is 1p a gram, while a 300 g "giant" pack for £3.30 is 1.1p a gram, so the giant one is dearer per gram; shelf labels often show the unit price in small print.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/2/) — Big "SALE!!!" signs, "was £600, now £400" and "up to 70% off" can mislead: the trainers may be £60 before and after, and "up to" may mean just two things at 70% off and the rest at 10%.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/3/) — Watch for shrinkflation, when a bar shrinks from 200 g to 180 g at the same £2, and remember that a picture on a box is an advert, while the ingredients list tells the truth.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/4/) — The unit price is the price for one gram, one litre, or one item; it lets you compare packs of different sizes fairly.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/5/) — Bigger packs are often cheaper per unit, but not always.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/6/) — A sign that says "sale" does not prove the price has fallen; compare the real prices.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/7/) — Some shops raise a price before a sale so that the discount looks bigger; price-tracking websites show what something really cost before.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/8/) — Black Friday is a big shopping sale day in late November.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/9/) — Shrinkflation is when a product gets smaller but the price stays the same.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/10/) — Multi-packs are not always cheaper: divide the pack price by the number of items to compare.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/11/) — "Up to 70% off" means the biggest discount is only on some things; most things are cut by less.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/12/) — Pictures on packets are adverts; the ingredients list shows what is really inside.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/13/) — Corner shops often charge more than big supermarkets because they buy smaller amounts and stay open late near you; you pay for convenience.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/14/) — "Limited edition" often means the same product in new packaging, sold to make you buy it now.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/13-unit-prices-and-sales-that-are-not-really-sales/15/) — "Dearer" is a British word for more expensive.
