- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/0/) — Tip a piggy bank onto the carpet and you see a jumble of coins; the size of a coin does not tell you its value, the number stamped on it does.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/1/) — In the UK, 100 pence (p) make one pound (£), and the coins are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2; the notes are £5, £10, £20 and £50.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/2/) — In the USA, 100 cents make one dollar ($): a penny is 1 cent, a nickel 5 cents, a dime 10 cents and a quarter 25 cents, so four quarters make a dollar.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/3/) — To count coins fast, group the same coins, multiply, then add the groups; to check change, count up from the price to the money you gave.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/4/) — Real notes carry security features, like a see-through window and pictures that change when you tilt the note, so fakes are hard to make and easy to spot.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/5/) — In the UK, 100 pence make £1; the coins are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/6/) — Size does not show value: the 2p coin is bigger than the £1 coin, but the £1 coin is worth fifty times more.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/7/) — In the USA, 100 cents make $1; a quarter is 25 cents, a dime 10 cents, a nickel 5 cents and a penny 1 cent.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/8/) — Ireland and many other European countries use the euro (€); 100 cents make one euro.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/9/) — In Australia the $1 and $2 coins are gold-coloured, so people call them "gold coins", though they contain no gold.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/10/) — "Quid" is slang for a pound, a "fiver" is £5 and a "tenner" is £10; "chancer" is Irish slang for someone who tries their luck.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/11/) — Change is the money you get back when you pay more than the price.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/12/) — Counting up from the price to the money you gave is the easiest way to check your change.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/13/) — Using the biggest coins first gives the fewest coins for any amount.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/14/) — Real notes have security features such as see-through windows and tilting pictures; fake money is worth nothing and making it is a serious crime.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/2-coins-and-notes-pounds-and-pence-dollars-and-cents/15/) — A price of £0.99 is 99p, only 1p less than £1; shops use prices ending in 9 because they feel cheaper.
