- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/0/) — Most family money comes from work: a salary is a fixed amount paid every month, so if Dad earns £2,000 a month, that is 12 × £2,000 = £24,000 a year, and it pays for the home, food and everything else.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/1/) — Some people are paid a wage for each hour: Jack's mum earns £12.50 an hour in a café, so an 8-hour shift brings £100, and more shifts mean more money; jobs at nights or weekends often pay more per hour.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/2/) — Before pay reaches the bank, tax and pension money is taken off: Dad's payslip says he earned £2,500 but £2,000 arrived, because £500 went on tax, which pays for schools, hospitals and roads; what is left is called take-home pay.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/3/) — Families get money in different ways, and all of them are normal: some people work for themselves and earn more some months than others, older people live on a pension, people between jobs can get help from the government, and a parent caring for a baby at home does real work that is just not paid.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/4/) — A salary is a fixed amount paid for a job, usually every month.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/5/) — A wage is pay for each hour or each week worked; fewer hours means less money.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/6/) — A shift is a set time at work, such as a day shift or a night shift.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/7/) — Jobs at unsocial hours, like nights and weekends, often pay more per hour because fewer people want those hours.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/8/) — Tax and pension payments are taken from pay before it arrives; what is left is called take-home pay.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/9/) — A payslip is a paper or screen showing what you earned and what was taken off.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/10/) — Self-employed people work for themselves; their income can go up and down from month to month, so they save in good months for slow ones.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/11/) — A pay rise is more money for the same job, but bills often go up too.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/12/) — Looking after children and a home is real work; it is unpaid, but it saves the family money and matters a lot.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/13/) — A pension is money paid to people after they retire, built up from what they paid in while working.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/14/) — When people lose their job, the government can give some money, called benefits, to help pay for basics; there is nothing to be ashamed of in this.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/money/20-wages-salary-and-where-family-money-comes-from/16/) — Payday is the day pay arrives; many families paid monthly have to make money last until the next payday.
