- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/0/) — Every cooking machine in the kitchen does one job: it turns electricity or burning gas into heat and puts that heat into food.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/1/) — They do it in different ways: the oven heats the air in a box, the toaster makes thin wires glow red, the kettle has a hot metal element sitting in the water, and the microwave makes the water inside the food wiggle.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/2/) — Many of them have a clever little switch that decides when to stop, like the click you hear when the kettle has boiled.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/3/) — Think of Sunday morning: the kettle clicks off, the toast pops up, and the oven ticks as it holds its heat, all without anyone watching a clock.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/4/) — The heat that cooks food also burns skin, so the rule is simple: the hot jobs belong to grown-ups, and you keep your hands and face away.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/5/) — An oven heats with glowing electric elements or a gas flame, and a thermostat switches the heat on and off to hold the temperature you chose; a fan oven blows the hot air round.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/6/) — A microwave oven sends out invisible microwaves that make the water in food wiggle and heat up, and the turntable spins so the food heats more evenly; microwaves heat only the outer few centimetres of the food, and the heat then spreads inwards.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/7/) — The metal mesh in a microwave door has holes too small for microwaves to pass through but big enough for light, so you can see in safely, and the microwaves stop as soon as the door opens.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/8/) — A kettle's switch has a strip made of two metals that bend differently when steam warms them, so it clicks off by itself when the water boils.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/9/) — The white crust inside a kettle is limescale, minerals left behind from hard water.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/10/) — A toaster's thin wires glow red hot, and the bread turns brown through the same kind of reaction that browns cooked meat.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/11/) — Gas hobs burn gas in rings of small flames, electric hobs heat with elements, and an induction hob uses a magnetic field to heat the pan itself, so the glass stays cooler than the pan.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/12/) — An extractor fan sucks up steam and smoke through a filter, and greasy filters must be cleaned because the grease can catch fire.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/13/) — An air fryer does not really fry: it is a small fan oven that blows very hot air round the food so the outside crisps with little oil.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/14/) — A slow cooker heats a pot gently for many hours, using about as much power as a light bulb or two, and stays hot long after it is switched off.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/15/) — When the knob of a gas cooker is turned, a spark lights the gas; natural gas has no smell of its own, so a smell is added to make leaks easy to notice.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/16/) — If you smell gas: tell an adult at once, do not press any switches, and get out; the adults open windows and call for help.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/17/) — The story goes that the microwave oven was invented in the 1940s when an engineer working with a radar machine noticed it had melted a sweet in his pocket.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/11-cooking-machines/18/) — Never put metal or foil in a microwave, and never poke a knife or fork into a toaster, even when it is switched off.
