- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/0/) — The battery in a torch is gentle: you can hold it all day.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/1/) — The electricity in the wall socket is about a hundred and fifty times stronger and can stop a heart.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/2/) — Our bodies are mostly salty water, and salty water lets electricity flow through it, so electricity can pass through a person on its way to the ground.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/3/) — Electricity also makes heat: wires that carry too much, chargers buried in a duvet, or a damaged battery can all get hot enough to start a fire.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/4/) — Picture a bedroom at night: a phone charging under the pillow, a heater on a stack of adaptors, fairy lights left on.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/5/) — Each one is a small, quiet danger you can learn to spot.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/6/) — The rules are all «never» and «tell an adult»: never anything in a socket, never water near plugged-in things, never touch a fallen wire, and tell a grown-up about anything broken, hot or swollen.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/7/) — Mains electricity in UK and European homes is around 230 volts (volts measure how hard electricity pushes), enough to stop a heart, while a torch battery is only one and a half volts.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/8/) — Never put fingers, keys, pencils or anything else into a socket, and tell an adult if a socket is broken or scorched.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/9/) — Water, especially with salt or soap in it, lets electricity pass through it and through you, which is why UK bathrooms usually have no ordinary sockets, only shaver sockets.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/12/) — The plastic covering on a cable keeps the live wires from touching you or each other, so frayed cables and broken plugs are not used, and cables are not run under rugs.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/13/) — Chargers and batteries get warm; under a pillow or duvet the heat cannot escape, so phones are charged on a hard surface with a proper charger; cheap fake chargers may skip safety parts, get very hot and start fires.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/14/) — Lithium batteries in phones, tablets and e-scooters hold a lot of energy; if one swells, gets hot or smells, tell an adult, and never pierce or crush it.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/15/) — A swallowed button cell battery can burn a child's throat within hours, even if it seems flat, so a child who may have swallowed one goes to hospital at once.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/16/) — Power lines carry very high voltage, and electricity can jump to a kite string, especially a wet one, so kites and drones are flown in open spaces far from power lines.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/17/) — Birds can sit on a power line because they touch only one wire and not the ground.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/18/) — Never climb a pylon or into an electricity substation, even for a ball, and never touch a fallen wire; the power company gets things out safely.
- [19](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/19/) — Substations carry a yellow warning triangle with a lightning bolt.
- [20](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/technology/16-electricity-dangers/20/) — Christmas and fairy lights are checked for damage, switched off at night, and indoor lights are never used outdoors.
