- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/0/) — This olympiad lesson is a puzzle box: Ukrainian is written in Cyrillic letters, and like a UKLO puzzle you can crack its words from a few examples, with no dictionary at all.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/1/) — Some letters are old friends: А, О, М, Т and К sound just as they look.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/2/) — Others are tricksters: В is v, Н is n, Р is r, С is s and И is y — so НІ is not «hi» but ni, no!
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/3/) — Some letters do the work of two English ones: Ш is sh, Ч is ch, Я is ya and Ю is yu — so БАБУСЯ has six letters, while babusya in English letters has seven.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/6/) — Ukrainian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which has 33 letters.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/7/) — А, О, М, Т and К are said much like English a, o, m, t and k: МАМА is mama, ТАТО is tato and ТАК is tak, yes.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/8/) — Some Cyrillic letters look like English ones but stand for other sounds: В is v, Н is n, Р is r, С is s and Х is kh.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/9/) — И is written y in English letters and sounds like a short «ih», while І is written i and sounds like «ee»: ТРИ is try (three), СІМ is sim (seven).
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/10/) — НІ is ni, no; an English reader may misread it as «hi», and ВИ is vy, the polite you, not «BI».
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/11/) — One Cyrillic letter can stand for two English ones: Ш is sh, Ч is ch, Я is ya and Ю is yu.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/12/) — In Cyrillic the calling form changes only the last letter: МАМА → МАМО, ТАТО → ТАТУ, БАБУСЯ → БАБУСЮ.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/13/) — Number words in Cyrillic: ОДИН (odyn, 1), ДВА (dva, 2), ТРИ (try, 3), ЧОТИРИ (chotyry, 4), ШІСТЬ (shist, 6), СІМ (sim, 7), ВІСІМ (visim, 8), СТО (sto, 100); Ь is a small letter that softens the sound before it.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/14/) — The teens end in -nadtsyat: odyNAdtsyat 11, dvaNAdtsyat 12, trynAdtsyat 13, p'yatNAdtsyat 15, shistNAdtsyat 16.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/15/) — The tens: DVAdtsyat 20, TRYdtsyat 30, p'yatdesYAt 50, shistdesYAt 60, sImdesyat 70, vIsimdesyat 80; SOrok (40) and devyanOsto (90) are the odd ones, not built from their unit.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/ukrainian-street/31-olympiad-cyrillic-code-breaking-and-numbers/16/) — Numbers like twenty-five are said ten first and then the unit, just as in English: DVAdtsyat p'yat.
