- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/0/) — The water on Earth is used again and again in a never-ending journey called the water cycle.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/1/) — The Sun warms seas, lakes, rivers and soil, and water evaporates into the air as invisible vapour; plants also give off water vapour from their leaves.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/2/) — As the moist air rises it cools, and the vapour condenses on tiny specks of dust, smoke and sea salt into droplets that make clouds.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/3/) — When the droplets join together and grow heavy, they fall as rain, snow or hail: this is called precipitation.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/4/) — The water runs over the land in streams and rivers or soaks into the ground, flows back to the sea; this gathering of water back into rivers, lakes and seas is called collection, and the journey starts again.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/5/) — For example, a raindrop that lands on you today may once have been in an ocean, in a cloud over another continent, or even drunk by a dinosaur.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/6/) — The heat of the Sun drives the water cycle.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/7/) — Evaporation lifts water from seas, lakes and soil into the air.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/8/) — Plants give off water vapour from their leaves; this is called transpiration.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/9/) — Air cools as it rises, so water vapour condenses high up into clouds.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/10/) — A cloud is made of millions of tiny water drops, or of tiny ice crystals where it is very cold.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/11/) — Rain, snow, sleet and hail are all called precipitation.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/12/) — Some rainwater soaks into the ground and becomes groundwater, which feeds wells and springs.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/13/) — When seawater evaporates the salt stays behind, so rain is fresh water.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/14/) — Most of Earth's water is salty water in the oceans; only a small part is fresh.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/15/) — Much of Earth's fresh water is frozen in ice sheets, huge sheets of ice covering land, and glaciers, slow rivers of ice.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/14-the-water-cycle/16/) — The amount of water on Earth stays about the same; it just keeps moving around.
