- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/0/) — Many puzzles about the body are solved by joining what we know about the body with what we know about energy, heat, light and sound.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/2/) — That is why you breathe faster and your heart beats faster: to bring oxygen in and carry the waste out faster.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/3/) — Burning food also makes heat, so you get hot.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/4/) — Sweat cools you because water takes heat from the skin when it evaporates.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/5/) — When you are cold, the opposite happens: muscles shiver, and shivering makes heat.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/6/) — A fever is not the illness itself but one of the body's weapons: many germs multiply more slowly when it is warmer, and the body's defences work faster.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/7/) — Light travels about a million times faster than sound, so we see lightning almost at once but hear the thunder later; sound takes about 3 seconds to go one kilometre (about 5 seconds to go one mile), so counting the seconds tells you how far away the storm is.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/8/) — Working muscles need more oxygen and make more carbon dioxide.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/10/) — Muscles make heat when they work.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/11/) — Sweat cools the body because evaporating water takes heat away from the skin.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/12/) — Shivering is the muscles working quickly to make heat.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/13/) — A fever is one of the ways the body fights germs.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/14/) — Light travels much faster than sound.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/15/) — Sound travels about one kilometre in 3 seconds through air.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/16/) — Sound travels about one mile in 5 seconds through air.
- [17](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/17/) — High on mountains each breath holds less oxygen, so climbers breathe harder.
- [18](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/18/) — When you are cold, blood vessels in the skin narrow so less heat is lost from the skin.
- [19](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/40-body-and-physics-reasoning/19/) — The inner ear has fluid that tells the brain how the head is moving; after spinning, the fluid keeps moving and you feel dizzy.
