- [0](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/0/) — Long ago people measured with hands, feet and steps, but everyone's feet are different, so the same room could be "ten feet" for one person and "twelve" for another.
- [1](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/1/) — So people agreed on standard units that are the same for everyone: the metre for length, the kilogram for mass, the second for time and the degree Celsius for temperature.
- [2](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/2/) — We choose a tool that fits the job: a ruler or tape measure for length, scales for mass, a clock or stopwatch for time and a thermometer for temperature.
- [3](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/3/) — Mass is how much stuff is in something; weight is how hard gravity pulls on it.
- [4](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/4/) — On the Moon an astronaut's mass stays the same but his weight is about six times smaller.
- [5](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/5/) — Example: a 1-litre bottle of water has a mass of about 1 kilogram, so you can feel what a kilogram is just by lifting it.
- [6](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/6/) — A standard unit is a measure that is the same for everyone.
- [7](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/7/) — A metre is 100 centimetres, and a kilometre is 1000 metres.
- [8](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/8/) — A kilogram is 1000 grams.
- [9](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/9/) — One litre of water has a mass of about one kilogram.
- [10](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/10/) — A minute is 60 seconds and an hour is 60 minutes.
- [11](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/11/) — Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at about 100 degrees Celsius.
- [12](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/12/) — The normal temperature inside a healthy human body is about 37 degrees Celsius; a temperature well above that, such as 39, is a fever, a sign of illness.
- [13](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/13/) — Mass is the amount of matter in an object; weight is the pull of gravity on it.
- [14](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/14/) — An object has the same mass on the Moon as on Earth, but it weighs less there.
- [15](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/15/) — When measuring with a ruler you must start from the zero mark.
- [16](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/90-measuring-the-world/16/) — Measuring the same thing several times and taking the average (add the results up and divide by how many there are) gives a more reliable result.
