[Andorra](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andorra) [corpus](../Andorra/ "in our corpus") la Vella[\[3\]](./#ref-3 "note 3") is the capital and largest city of Andorra.[1](1/ "tree and pragmatics") It is located high in the east [Pyrenees](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrenees), between France and Spain.[2](2/ "tree and pragmatics") It is also the name of the [Andorran parish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parishes_of_Andorra) that surrounds the capital.[3](3/ "tree and pragmatics")

as of 2023, the city had a population of 24,042,[\[4\]](./#ref-4 "note 4")[\[1\]](./#ref-1 "note 1") and the urban area, which includes [Escaldes–Engordany](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escaldes–Engordany) plus satellite villages, has over 40,000 inhabitants.[\[5\]](./#ref-5 "note 5")[\[6\]](./#ref-6 "note 6")[4](4/ "tree and pragmatics")

The principal industry is tourism, and the country also earns foreign income from being a [tax haven](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_haven).[5](5/ "tree and pragmatics") It is at an elevation of 1023 m, and is the highest capital city in Europe.[\[7\]](./#ref-7 "note 7")[6](6/ "tree and pragmatics") The city shares a border with Spain.[7](7/ "tree and pragmatics")

## Name

Andorra la Vella means "the city of Andorra", to distinguish it from the Principality of Andorra as a whole.[\[8\]](./#ref-8 "note 8")[8](8/ "tree and pragmatics") Although in Catalan the word vella (like French vieille) is derived from the Latin word vetula which means "old", the Vella here (like French ville and Catalan vila) is derived from the Latin word villa, meaning "city".[\[9\]](./#ref-9 "note 9")[9](9/ "tree and pragmatics")

## History

The site of Andorra la Vella has been settled since prior to the [Christian era](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_era)—notably by the [Andosin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andosin) tribe from the late [Neolithic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neolithic).[10](10/ "tree and pragmatics") Andorra was part of the County of Urgell, one of the [Catalan counties](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_counties) of the [Marca Hispanica](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marca_Hispanica) created by [Charlemagne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne) in the eighth century as a buffer from the [Moorish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moors) settlers in the [Iberian Peninsula](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberian_Peninsula).[\[10\]](./#ref-10 "note 10")[11](11/ "tree and pragmatics")

The settlement of Andorra la Vella has been the principal city of Andorra since 1278 when the French and the Episcopal co-princes [agreed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paréage_of_Andorra_1278) to joint suzerainty.[12](12/ "tree and pragmatics") Andorra la Vella's old town—the [Barri Antic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barri_Antic)—includes streets and buildings dating from this time.[13](13/ "tree and pragmatics") Its most notable building is the [Casa de la Vall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_de_la_Vall)—constructed in the early sixteenth century—which has been the state's parliamentary house since 1702.[14](14/ "tree and pragmatics") Andorra la Vella was, during this period, the capital of a largely isolated and [feudal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feudal) lordship within the [Principality of Catalonia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Catalonia), which retained its existence due to this principle of co-sovereignty.[15](15/ "tree and pragmatics")

Well into the twentieth century, the area around Andorra la Vella remained largely forgotten.[16](16/ "tree and pragmatics") After political turmoil in the 1930s and an attempted coup by [Boris Skossyreff](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Skossyreff), an informal democracy developed.[17](17/ "tree and pragmatics")

In 1993, the country's first constitution formalised this [parliamentary democracy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliamentary_democracy) with executive, legislative, and judicial branches located in Andorra la Vella.[18](18/ "tree and pragmatics")

During this period, Andorra also developed as a [tax haven](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_haven), resulting in the construction of modern banking offices in Andorra La Vella.[19](19/ "tree and pragmatics") The city also developed its skiing facilities, to the extent that Andorra la Vella was Andorra's applicant city for the XXI Olympic Winter Games, the [2010 Winter Olympics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics).[20](20/ "tree and pragmatics") However, Andorra la Vella was not selected by the [IOC](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOC) as a candidate city, following the evaluation report of an IOC commission.[21](21/ "tree and pragmatics") It also hosted both the 1991 and [2005 Games of the Small States of Europe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Games_of_the_Small_States_of_Europe).[22](22/ "tree and pragmatics")
