Like many other Eastern European countries, Belarus has a negative population growth rate and a negative natural growth rate.[348](../../348/ "tree and pragmatics") In 2007, Belarus's population declined by 0.41% and its [fertility rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_fertility_rate) was 1.22,[\[264\]](../../page/5/#ref-264 "note 264") well [below the replacement rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sub-replacement_fertility).[349](../../349/ "tree and pragmatics") However, its [net migration rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_migration_rate) is 0.38 per 1,000, indicating that Belarus experiences slightly more immigration than emigration, unlike most neighbouring countries which experience significant negative net migration. as of 2015, 69.9% of Belarus's population is aged 14 to 64; 15.5% is under 14, and 14.6% is 65 or older.[350](../../350/ "tree and pragmatics") Its population is also ageing; the median age of 30–34 is estimated to rise to between 60 and 64 in 2050.[\[265\]](../../page/5/#ref-265 "note 265")[351](../../351/ "tree and pragmatics") There are about 0.87 males per female in Belarus.[\[264\]](../../page/5/#ref-264 "note 264")[352](../../352/ "tree and pragmatics") The average life expectancy is 72.15 (66.53 years for men and 78.1 years for women).[\[264\]](../../page/5/#ref-264 "note 264")[353](../../353/ "tree and pragmatics") Over 99% of Belarusians aged 15 and older are [literate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literate).[\[264\]](../../page/5/#ref-264 "note 264")[354](../../354/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Languages

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [Languages of Belarus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Belarus)

Belarus's two official languages are [Russian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language) and [Belarusian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarusian_language).[\[266\]](../../page/5/#ref-266 "note 266")[355](../../355/ "tree and pragmatics") According to data published by the [National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Statistical_Committee_of_the_Republic_of_Belarus), the [2019 census](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Belarus_census) recorded that 54.1% of the population described Belarusian as their "mother tongue" compared to 42.3% who described Russian in that way.[\[267\]](../../page/5/#ref-267 "note 267")[356](../../356/ "tree and pragmatics") In addition, 71.4% described Russian and 26% described Belarusian as the "language normally spoken at home".[\[268\]](../../page/5/#ref-268 "note 268")[357](../../357/ "tree and pragmatics") Minorities also speak [Polish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_language), [Ukrainian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_language) and [Eastern Yiddish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Yiddish).[\[269\]](../../page/5/#ref-269 "note 269")[358](../../358/ "tree and pragmatics") Following the election of [Alexander Lukashenko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Lukashenko), plans to have most schools teach in Belarusian were scrapped and they continued mainly teaching in Russian.[\[270\]](../../page/5/#ref-270 "note 270")[359](../../359/ "tree and pragmatics") The annual circulation of Belarusian-language literature also significantly decreased from 1990 to 2020.[\[271\]](../../page/5/#ref-271 "note 271")[360](../../360/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Religion

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [Religion in Belarus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Belarus)

According to the census of November 2011, 58.9% of all Belarusians adhered to some kind of religion; out of those, [Eastern Orthodoxy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Orthodoxy) made up about 82%: Eastern Orthodox in Belarus are mainly part of the [Belarusian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarusian_Exarchate_of_the_Russian_Orthodox_Church), though a small [Belarusian Autocephalous Orthodox Church](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarusian_Autocephalous_Orthodox_Church) also exists.[\[272\]](../../page/5/#ref-272 "note 272")[361](../../361/ "tree and pragmatics") [Roman Catholicism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholicism_in_Belarus) is practised mostly in the western regions, and there are also different denominations of Protestantism.[\[273\]](../../page/5/#ref-273 "note 273")[\[274\]](../../page/5/#ref-274 "note 274")[362](../../362/ "tree and pragmatics") Minorities also practice [Greek Catholicism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarusian_Greek_Catholic_Church), [Judaism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism), [Islam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam) and [neo-paganism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_paganism).[363](../../363/ "tree and pragmatics") Overall, 48.3% of the population is Orthodox Christian, 41.1% is not religious, 7.1% is Roman Catholic and 3.3% follows other religions.[\[272\]](../../page/5/#ref-272 "note 272")[364](../../364/ "tree and pragmatics")

Belarus's Catholic minority is concentrated in the western part of the country, especially around [Grodno](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grodno), consisting of a mixture of Belarusians and the country's [Polish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_people) and [Lithuanian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithuanian_people) minorities.[\[275\]](../../page/5/#ref-275 "note 275")[365](../../365/ "tree and pragmatics") President Lukashenko has stated that Orthodox and Catholic believers are the "two main confessions in our country".[\[276\]](../../page/5/#ref-276 "note 276")[366](../../366/ "tree and pragmatics")

Belarus was once a major centre of European Jews, with 10% of the population being [Jewish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Belarus).[367](../../367/ "tree and pragmatics") But since the mid-20th century, the number of Jews has been reduced by [the Holocaust](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Holocaust), deportation, and emigration, so that today it is a very small minority of less than one per cent.[\[277\]](../../page/5/#ref-277 "note 277")[368](../../368/ "tree and pragmatics") The [Lipka Tatars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipka_Tatars), numbering over 15,000, are predominantly [Muslims](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Belarus).[369](../../369/ "tree and pragmatics") According to Article 16 of the [Constitution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_of_Belarus), Belarus has no official religion.[370](../../370/ "tree and pragmatics") While the [freedom of worship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_religion) is granted in the same article, religious organisations deemed harmful to the government or social order can be prohibited.[\[170\]](../../page/5/#ref-170 "note 170")[371](../../371/ "tree and pragmatics")

## Culture

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [Culture of Belarus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Belarus)

### Arts and literature

The Belarusian government sponsors annual cultural festivals such as the [Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavianski_Bazaar_in_Vitebsk),[\[278\]](../../page/5/#ref-278 "note 278") which showcases Belarusian performers, artists, writers, musicians, and actors.[372](../../372/ "tree and pragmatics") Several state holidays, such as [Independence Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_%28Belarus%29) and [Victory Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_Day_%289_May%29), draw big crowds and often include displays such as fireworks and military parades, especially in Vitebsk and Minsk.[\[279\]](../../page/5/#ref-279 "note 279")[373](../../373/ "tree and pragmatics") The government's Ministry of Culture finances events promoting Belarusian arts and culture both inside and outside the country.[374](../../374/ "tree and pragmatics")

Belarusian literature[\[280\]](../../page/5/#ref-280 "note 280") began with 11th- to 13th-century religious scripture, such as the 12th-century poetry of [Cyril of Turaw](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyril_of_Turaw).[\[281\]](../../page/5/#ref-281 "note 281")[375](../../375/ "tree and pragmatics")

By the 16th century, [Polotsk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polotsk) resident [Francysk Skaryna](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francysk_Skaryna) translated the Bible into Belarusian.[376](../../376/ "tree and pragmatics") It was published in [Prague](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague) [corpus](../../../Prague/ "in our corpus") and [Vilnius](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilnius) [corpus](../../../Vilnius/ "in our corpus") sometime between 1517 and 1525, making it the first book printed in Belarus or anywhere in Eastern Europe.[\[282\]](../../page/5/#ref-282 "note 282")[377](../../377/ "tree and pragmatics") The modern era of Belarusian literature began in the late 19th century; one prominent writer was [Yanka Kupala](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yanka_Kupala).[378](../../378/ "tree and pragmatics") Many Belarusian writers of the time, such as [Uładzimir Žyłka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uładzimir_Žyłka), Kazimir Svayak, [Yakub Kolas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakub_Kolas), [Źmitrok Biadula](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Źmitrok_Biadula), and [Maksim Haretski](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maksim_Haretski), wrote for [Nasha Niva](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasha_Niva), a Belarusian-language paper published that was previously published in Vilnius but now is published in Minsk.[\[283\]](../../page/5/#ref-283 "note 283")[379](../../379/ "tree and pragmatics")

After Belarus was incorporated into the Soviet Union, the Soviet government took control of the Republic's cultural affairs.[380](../../380/ "tree and pragmatics") At first, a policy of "Belarusianization" was followed in the newly formed Byelorussian SSR.[381](../../381/ "tree and pragmatics") This policy was reversed in the 1930s, and the majority of prominent Belarusian intellectuals and nationalist advocates were either exiled or killed in Stalinist purges.[\[284\]](../../page/5/#ref-284 "note 284")[382](../../382/ "tree and pragmatics") The free development of literature occurred only in Polish-held territory until Soviet occupation in 1939.[383](../../383/ "tree and pragmatics") Several poets and authors went into exile after the Nazi occupation of Belarus and would not return until the 1960s.[\[282\]](../../page/5/#ref-282 "note 282")[384](../../384/ "tree and pragmatics")

The last major revival of Belarusian literature occurred in the 1960s with novels published by [Vasil Bykaŭ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasil_Bykaŭ) and [Uladzimir Karatkievich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uladzimir_Karatkievich).[385](../../385/ "tree and pragmatics") An influential author who examined the catastrophes the country has suffered was [Ales Adamovich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ales_Adamovich).[386](../../386/ "tree and pragmatics") He was named by [Svetlana Alexievich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svetlana_Alexievich), the Belarusian winner of the [Nobel Prize in Literature](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Prize_in_Literature) 2015, as "her main teacher, who helped her to find a path of her own".[\[285\]](../../page/5/#ref-285 "note 285")[387](../../387/ "tree and pragmatics")

[Music in Belarus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Belarus) largely comprises a rich tradition of folk and religious music.[388](../../388/ "tree and pragmatics") The country's folk music traditions can be traced back to the times of the [Grand Duchy of Lithuania](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Duchy_of_Lithuania).[389](../../389/ "tree and pragmatics") In the 19th century, Polish composer [Stanisław Moniuszko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanisław_Moniuszko) composed operas and chamber music pieces while living in Minsk.[390](../../390/ "tree and pragmatics") During his stay, he worked with Belarusian poet [Vintsent Dunin-Martsinkyevich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vintsent_Dunin-Martsinkyevich) and created the opera Sialanka (Peasant Woman).[391](../../391/ "tree and pragmatics") At the end of the 19th century, major Belarusian cities formed their own opera and ballet companies.[392](../../392/ "tree and pragmatics") The ballet [Nightingale](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightingale_%28ballet%29) by M. Kroshner was composed during the Soviet era and became the first Belarusian ballet showcased at the National Academic Vialiki Ballet Theatre in Minsk.[\[286\]](../../page/5/#ref-286 "note 286")[393](../../393/ "tree and pragmatics")

After the [Second World War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_World_War), music focused on the hardships of the Belarusian people or on those who took up arms in defence of the homeland.[394](../../394/ "tree and pragmatics") During this period, [Anatoly Bogatyrev](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatoly_Bogatyrev), creator of the opera In Polesye Virgin Forest, served as the "tutor" of Belarusian composers.[\[287\]](../../page/5/#ref-287 "note 287")[395](../../395/ "tree and pragmatics") The National Academic Theatre of Ballet in Minsk was awarded the [Benois de la Dance Prize](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prix_Benois_de_la_Danse) in 1996 as the top ballet company in the world.[\[287\]](../../page/5/#ref-287 "note 287")[396](../../396/ "tree and pragmatics") Rock music has become increasingly popular in recent years, though the Belarusian government has attempted to limit the amount of foreign music aired on the radio in favour of traditional Belarusian music.[397](../../397/ "tree and pragmatics") Since 2004, Belarus has been sending artists to the [Eurovision Song Contest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest).[\[288\]](../../page/5/#ref-288 "note 288")[\[289\]](../../page/5/#ref-289 "note 289")[398](../../398/ "tree and pragmatics")

[Marc Chagall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Chagall) was born in Liozna (near [Vitebsk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitebsk)) in 1887.[399](../../399/ "tree and pragmatics") He spent the [World War I](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I) years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country's most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist [avant-garde](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avant-garde) and was a founder of the Vitebsk Arts College.[\[290\]](../../page/5/#ref-290 "note 290")[\[291\]](../../page/5/#ref-291 "note 291")[400](../../400/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Dress

The traditional Belarusian dress originates from the [Kievan Rus'](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kievan_Rus%27) period.[401](../../401/ "tree and pragmatics") Due to the cool climate, clothes were designed to conserve body heat and were usually made from [flax](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flax) or [wool](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wool).[402](../../402/ "tree and pragmatics") They were decorated with ornate patterns influenced by the neighbouring cultures: Poles, Lithuanians, Latvians, Russians, and other European nations.[403](../../403/ "tree and pragmatics") Each region of Belarus has developed specific design patterns.[\[292\]](../../page/5/#ref-292 "note 292")[404](../../404/ "tree and pragmatics") One ornamental pattern common in early dresses currently decorates the hoist of the [Belarusian national flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Belarus), adopted in a [disputed referendum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_Belarusian_referendum) in 1995.[\[293\]](../../page/5/#ref-293 "note 293")[405](../../405/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Cuisine

[Belarusian cuisine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarusian_cuisine) consists mainly of vegetables, meat (particularly pork), and bread.[406](../../406/ "tree and pragmatics") Foods are usually either slowly cooked or [stewed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewed).[407](../../407/ "tree and pragmatics") Typically, Belarusians eat a light breakfast and two hearty meals later in the day.[408](../../408/ "tree and pragmatics") [Wheat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat) and [rye](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rye) bread are consumed in Belarus, but rye is more plentiful because conditions are too harsh for growing wheat.[409](../../409/ "tree and pragmatics") To show hospitality, a host traditionally presents an offering of [bread and salt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and_salt) when greeting a guest or visitor.[\[294\]](../../page/5/#ref-294 "note 294")[410](../../410/ "tree and pragmatics")
