Gaborone (/UKˌɡæbəˈroʊni,\_ˌhæb-/ GAB-ə-ROH-nee-,\_-HAB,[\[8\]](page/3/#ref-8 "note 8")[\[9\]](page/3/#ref-9 "note 9") /USˌɡɑːbəˈroʊni,\_-neɪ/ GAH-bə-ROH-nee-,\_--,[\[8\]](page/3/#ref-8 "note 8") χabʊˈrʊnɛ) is the [capital](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_city) and [largest city](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Botswana) of [Botswana](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botswana) [corpus](../Botswana/ "in our corpus").[1](1/ "tree and pragmatics") It was formerly spelled as Gaberones during the colonial era, a name occasionally used in older English texts and maps.[\[10\]](page/3/#ref-10 "note 10")[2](2/ "tree and pragmatics") With a population of 246,325 based on the 2022 [census](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census),[\[4\]](page/3/#ref-4 "note 4") about 10% of the total population of Botswana.[\[11\]](page/3/#ref-11 "note 11")[3](3/ "tree and pragmatics") Its metropolitan area is home to 534,842 inhabitants at the 2022 census.[\[12\]](page/3/#ref-12 "note 12")[4](4/ "tree and pragmatics")

Gaborone is situated between [Kgale Hill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kgale_Hill) and Oodi Hill, near the confluence of the [Notwane River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notwane_River) and Segoditshane River in the southeastern corner of Botswana, within 15 km from the South African border.[\[13\]](page/3/#ref-13 "note 13")[5](5/ "tree and pragmatics") The city is served by the [Sir Seretse Khama International Airport](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Seretse_Khama_International_Airport).[6](6/ "tree and pragmatics") It is an administrative district in its own right, but is the capital of the surrounding [South-East District](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South-East_District_%28Botswana%29).[\[14\]](page/3/#ref-14 "note 14")[7](7/ "tree and pragmatics") Locals often refer to the city as GC or Motse-Mshate.[\[15\]](page/3/#ref-15 "note 15")[8](8/ "tree and pragmatics")

The city of Gaborone is named after [Chief Gaborone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Gaborone) of the [Tlokwa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlokwa) people, who once controlled land nearby.[\[16\]](page/3/#ref-16 "note 16")[9](9/ "tree and pragmatics") Because it was not affiliated with any specific indigenous group and was close to fresh water, the city was [planned](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_town) to be the capital in the mid-1960s when the [Bechuanaland Protectorate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechuanaland_Protectorate) became an independent nation.[\[16\]](page/3/#ref-16 "note 16")[10](10/ "tree and pragmatics") The centre of the city comprises a long strip of commercial businesses, called "Main Mall", with a semi-circular area of government offices to its east.[11](11/ "tree and pragmatics") Gaborone was once one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, and this has created problems with housing and illegal settlements.[12](12/ "tree and pragmatics") The city also dealt with conflicts spilling into the country from [Zimbabwe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimbabwe) [corpus](../Zimbabwe/ "in our corpus") and [South Africa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa) [corpus](../South_Africa/ "in our corpus") during the 1980s.[13](13/ "tree and pragmatics")

Gaborone is the political and economic capital of Botswana, home to its largest companies and the [Botswana Stock Exchange](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botswana_Stock_Exchange).[14](14/ "tree and pragmatics") It also serves as the headquarters of the [Southern African Development Community](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_African_Development_Community) (SADC).[\[17\]](page/3/#ref-17 "note 17")[15](15/ "tree and pragmatics") The main spoken languages in the city include Setswana ([Tswana](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tswana_language)), [English](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language), [Kalanga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalanga_language), and [Kgalagadi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kgalagadi_language).[16](16/ "tree and pragmatics")

## History

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [History of Gaborone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Gaborone), [Timeline of Gaborone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Gaborone)

Evidence shows that there have been inhabitants along the [Notwane River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notwane_River) for centuries.[17](17/ "tree and pragmatics") In more recent history, the [Tlokwa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlokwa) left the [Magaliesberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magaliesberg) ranges to settle in the area around 1880, and called the settlement [Moshaweng](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moshaweng).[18](18/ "tree and pragmatics") The word "Gaborone" literally means "it does not fit badly" or "it is not unbecoming".[\[18\]](page/3/#ref-18 "note 18")[19](19/ "tree and pragmatics") The city was then called "Gaberones" by early European colonizers.[\[19\]](page/3/#ref-19 "note 19")[20](20/ "tree and pragmatics") Gaberones, a shortening of "Gaborone's Village", was named after [Chief Gaborone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Gaborone) of the Tlokwa,[\[13\]](page/3/#ref-13 "note 13") whose home village (now called [Tlokweng](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlokweng)) was across the river from the Government Camp, the name of the colonial government headquarters.[21](21/ "tree and pragmatics") The nickname, "GC", comes from the name "Government Camp".[\[15\]](page/3/#ref-15 "note 15")[22](22/ "tree and pragmatics") In 1890, [Cecil John Rhodes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_John_Rhodes) picked Gaberones to house a colonial fort.[\[20\]](page/3/#ref-20 "note 20")[23](23/ "tree and pragmatics") The fort was where Rhodes planned the [Jameson Raid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jameson_Raid).[\[19\]](page/3/#ref-19 "note 19")[24](24/ "tree and pragmatics") The city changed its name from Gaberones to Gaborone in 1969.[\[21\]](page/3/#ref-21 "note 21")[\[22\]](page/3/#ref-22 "note 22")[25](25/ "tree and pragmatics")

The modern town was only founded in 1964, after a decision was taken to establish a capital for Botswana, which became a self governing territory in 1965, before becoming a fully independent republic on 30 September 1966.[26](26/ "tree and pragmatics")

In 1965, the capital of the [Bechuanaland Protectorate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechuanaland_Protectorate) moved from [Mafeking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahikeng) to Gaberones.[\[23\]](page/3/#ref-23 "note 23")[27](27/ "tree and pragmatics") When Botswana gained its independence, [Lobatse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobatse) was the first choice as the nation's capital.[\[24\]](page/3/#ref-24 "note 24")[28](28/ "tree and pragmatics") However, Lobatse was deemed too limited, and instead, a new capital city would be created next to Gaberones.[\[15\]](page/3/#ref-15 "note 15")[29](29/ "tree and pragmatics") The city was chosen because of its proximity to a fresh water source, its proximity to the railway to [Pretoria](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretoria) [corpus](../Pretoria/ "in our corpus"), its central location among the central tribes, and its lack of association with those surrounding tribes.[\[25\]](page/3/#ref-25 "note 25")[30](30/ "tree and pragmatics")

The city was planned under [Garden city principles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_city_movement) with numerous pedestrian walkways and open spaces.[\[26\]](page/3/#ref-26 "note 26")[31](31/ "tree and pragmatics") Building of Gaborone started in mid-1964.[32](32/ "tree and pragmatics") During the city's construction, the chairman of Gaberones Township Authority, Geoffrey Cornish, likened the layout of the city to a "brandy glass" with the government offices in the base of the glass and businesses in the "mall", a strip of land extending from the base.[\[27\]](page/3/#ref-27 "note 27")[33](33/ "tree and pragmatics")

Most of the early town was built within three years, as a small town designed to accommodate 20,000 people – only to later develop after independence into a modern city.[34](34/ "tree and pragmatics") Buildings in early Gaborone include assembly buildings, government offices, a power station, a hospital, schools, a radio station, a telephone exchange, police stations, a post office, and more than 1,000 houses.[\[28\]](page/3/#ref-28 "note 28")[35](35/ "tree and pragmatics") Because the town was built so quickly, there was a massive influx of labourers who had built illegal settlements on the new city's southern industrial development zone.[36](36/ "tree and pragmatics") These settlements were named Naledi.[37](37/ "tree and pragmatics") The latter term literally means "the star", but could also mean "under the open sky" or "a community that stands out from all others".[38](38/ "tree and pragmatics") In 1971, because of the growth of illegal settlements, the Gaborone Town Council and the Ministry of Local Government and Lands surveyed an area called Bontleng, which would contain low-income housing.[39](39/ "tree and pragmatics") However, Naledi still grew, and the demand for housing was greater than ever.[40](40/ "tree and pragmatics") In 1973, the Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) built a "New Naledi" across the road from the "Old Naledi".[41](41/ "tree and pragmatics") Residents from Old Naledi would be moved to New Naledi.[42](42/ "tree and pragmatics") However, the demand for housing increased yet again; moreover, the residents who relocated to New Naledi disliked the houses.[43](43/ "tree and pragmatics") The problem was solved in 1975 when Sir [Seretse Khama](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seretse_Khama), the president of Botswana, rezoned Naledi from an industrial zone to a low-income housing area.[\[29\]](page/3/#ref-29 "note 29")[44](44/ "tree and pragmatics")

On 30 September 1966, [Bechuanaland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechuanaland_Protectorate) became the eleventh [British dependency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_dependency) in Africa to become independent.[45](45/ "tree and pragmatics") The first [mayor of Gaborone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaborone_City_Council#List_of_mayors) was Reverend [Derek Jones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Jones_%28mayor%29).[\[30\]](page/3/#ref-30 "note 30")[46](46/ "tree and pragmatics") The old Gaberones became a suburb of the new Gaborone, and is now known as "the Village".[\[15\]](page/3/#ref-15 "note 15")[47](47/ "tree and pragmatics")

In the mid-1980s, South Africa attacked Botswana and conducted raids on Gaborone and other border towns.[48](48/ "tree and pragmatics") The [Raid on Gaborone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Gaborone) resulted in twelve deaths.[49](49/ "tree and pragmatics")

After the [1994 General Elections](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botswana_general_election,_1994), riots started in Gaborone because of high unemployment and other issues.[\[31\]](page/3/#ref-31 "note 31")[50](50/ "tree and pragmatics")

Today, Gaborone is growing very rapidly.[51](51/ "tree and pragmatics") In 1964, Gaborone only had 3,855 citizens;[\[32\]](page/3/#ref-32 "note 32") seven years later, the city had almost 18,000 residents.[\[33\]](page/3/#ref-33 "note 33")[52](52/ "tree and pragmatics") The city originally planned on 20,000 citizens, but by 1992, the city had 138,000 people.[53](53/ "tree and pragmatics") This has led to many squatter settlements on undeveloped land.[\[34\]](page/3/#ref-34 "note 34")[54](54/ "tree and pragmatics") Former mayor Veronica Lesole has stated that Gaborone's development problems were caused by the original city planners.[\[35\]](page/3/#ref-35 "note 35")[55](55/ "tree and pragmatics") 67[56](56/ "tree and pragmatics")
