Main article: [Education in Honduras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Honduras)

About 83.6% of the population are literate, and the net primary enrollment rate was 94% in 2004.[\[125\]](../../page/5/#ref-125 "note 125")[424](../../424/ "tree and pragmatics") In 2014, the primary school completion rate was 90.7%.[\[126\]](../../page/5/#ref-126 "note 126")[425](../../425/ "tree and pragmatics") Honduras has bilingual (Spanish and English) and even trilingual (Spanish with English, Arabic, or German) [schools](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_schools_in_Honduras) and [numerous universities](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_universities_in_Honduras).[\[127\]](../../page/5/#ref-127 "note 127")[426](../../426/ "tree and pragmatics")

The higher education is governed by the [National Autonomous University of Honduras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Autonomous_University_of_Honduras) which has centers in the large cities.[427](../../427/ "tree and pragmatics") Honduras was ranked 119th in the [Global Innovation Index](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Innovation_Index) in 2025.[\[128\]](../../page/5/#ref-128 "note 128")[\[129\]](../../page/5/#ref-129 "note 129")[428](../../428/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Crime

[Crime in Honduras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Honduras) is rampant, and criminals operate with a high degree of impunity.[429](../../429/ "tree and pragmatics") Honduras has one of the highest national murder rates in the world; cities such as San Pedro Sula and the Tegucigalpa have registered homicide rates among the highest in the world.[430](../../430/ "tree and pragmatics") The violence is associated with [drug trafficking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_drug_trade) as Honduras is often a transit point, and with several urban gangs, mainly the [MS-13](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-13) and the [18th Street gang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18th_Street_gang).[431](../../431/ "tree and pragmatics") Homicide violence reached a peak in 2012 with an average of 20 homicides per day.[\[130\]](../../page/5/#ref-130 "note 130")[432](../../432/ "tree and pragmatics") Official statistics from the Honduran Observatory on National Violence show the homicide rate was 60 per 100,000 in 2015 with the majority of homicide cases unprosecuted.[\[131\]](../../page/5/#ref-131 "note 131")[433](../../433/ "tree and pragmatics") But as recently as 2017, organizations such as InSight Crime's show figures of 42 per 100,000 inhabitants,[\[132\]](../../page/5/#ref-132 "note 132") a 26% drop from 2016 figures.[434](../../434/ "tree and pragmatics")

Highway assaults and carjackings at roadblocks or checkpoints set up by criminals with police uniforms and equipment occur frequently.[435](../../435/ "tree and pragmatics") Although reports of kidnappings of foreigners are not common, families of kidnapping victims often pay ransoms without reporting the crime to police out of fear of retribution, so kidnapping figures may be underreported.[\[131\]](../../page/5/#ref-131 "note 131")[436](../../436/ "tree and pragmatics")

Violence increased after [Plan Colombia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_Colombia) was implemented and after Mexican President [Felipe Calderón](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felipe_Calderón) declared the war against drug trafficking in Mexico.[\[133\]](../../page/5/#ref-133 "note 133")[437](../../437/ "tree and pragmatics") Along with El Salvador and Guatemala, Honduras forms part of the [Northern Triangle of Central America](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Triangle_of_Central_America), which has been characterized as one of the most violent regions in the world.[\[134\]](../../page/5/#ref-134 "note 134")[438](../../438/ "tree and pragmatics") As a result of crime and increasing murder rates, the flow of migrants from Honduras to the U.S. also went up.[439](../../439/ "tree and pragmatics") The rise in violence in the region has received international attention.[440](../../440/ "tree and pragmatics")

[Roatán](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roatán) and the other Bay Islands have lower crime rates than the mainland.[441](../../441/ "tree and pragmatics") This has been attributed to measures taken by government and business in 2014 to improve tourist safety.[\[131\]](../../page/5/#ref-131 "note 131")[442](../../442/ "tree and pragmatics") In the less populated region of [Gracias a Dios](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gracias_a_Dios_Department), narcotics-trafficking is rampant and police presence is scarce.[443](../../443/ "tree and pragmatics") Threats against U.S. citizens by drug traffickers and other criminal organizations have resulted in the U.S. Embassy placing restrictions on the travel of U.S. officials through the region.[\[131\]](../../page/5/#ref-131 "note 131")[444](../../444/ "tree and pragmatics")

### National symbols

The [flag of Honduras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Honduras) is composed of three equal horizontal stripes.[445](../../445/ "tree and pragmatics") The blue upper and lower stripes represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.[446](../../446/ "tree and pragmatics") The central stripe is white.[447](../../447/ "tree and pragmatics") It contains five blue stars representing the five states of the [Central American Union](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Republic_of_Central_America).[448](../../448/ "tree and pragmatics") The middle star represents Honduras, located in the center of the Central American Union.[449](../../449/ "tree and pragmatics")

The coat of arms was established in 1945.[450](../../450/ "tree and pragmatics") It is an equilateral triangle, at the base is a volcano between three castles, over which is a rainbow and the sun shining.[451](../../451/ "tree and pragmatics") The triangle is placed on an area that symbolizes being bathed by both seas.[452](../../452/ "tree and pragmatics") Around all of this an oval containing in golden lettering: "Republic of Honduras, Free, Sovereign and Independent".[453](../../453/ "tree and pragmatics")

The "[National Anthem of Honduras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Anthem_of_Honduras)" is a result of a contest carried out in 1914 during the presidency of [Manuel Bonilla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Bonilla).[454](../../454/ "tree and pragmatics") Poet [Augusto Coello](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusto_Coello) wrote the anthem, with German-born Honduran composer [Carlos Hartling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Hartling) writing the music.[455](../../455/ "tree and pragmatics") The anthem was officially adopted on 15 November 1915, during the presidency of [Alberto de Jesús Membreño](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_de_Jesús_Membreño).[456](../../456/ "tree and pragmatics")

The national flower is the orchid [Rhyncholaelia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyncholaelia) digbyana, which replaced the rose in 1969.[457](../../457/ "tree and pragmatics") The change of the national flower was carried out during the administration of general [Oswaldo López Arellano](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oswaldo_López_Arellano), thinking that Brassavola digbyana "is an indigenous plant of Honduras; having this flower exceptional characteristics of beauty, vigor and distinction", as the decree dictates it.[458](../../458/ "tree and pragmatics")

The national tree was declared in 1928 to be simply "the Pine that appears symbolically in our Coat of Arms" (el Pino que figura simbólicamente en nuestro Escudo),[\[135\]](../../page/5/#ref-135 "note 135") even though pines comprise a genus and not a species, and even though legally there's no specification as for what kind of pine should appear in the coat of arms either.[459](../../459/ "tree and pragmatics") Because of its commonality in the country, the [Pinus oocarpa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_oocarpa) species has become since then the species most strongly associated as the national tree, but legally it is not so.[460](../../460/ "tree and pragmatics") Another species associated as the national tree is the [Pinus caribaea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_caribaea).[461](../../461/ "tree and pragmatics")

The national mammal is the [white-tailed deer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-tailed_deer) (Odocoileus virginianus), which was adopted as a measure to avoid excessive depredation.[462](../../462/ "tree and pragmatics") It is one of two endemic species of deer.[463](../../463/ "tree and pragmatics") The national bird is the [scarlet macaw](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_macaw) (Ara macao).[464](../../464/ "tree and pragmatics") This bird was much valued by the pre-Columbian civilizations of Honduras.[465](../../465/ "tree and pragmatics")

All other sports tend to be minor at best, as Honduras has not won a medal in the [Olympics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honduras_at_the_Olympics) and has not made notable results in other [world championships](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_championship).[\[153\]](../../page/5/#ref-153 "note 153")[518](../../518/ "tree and pragmatics") However, Hondurans have consistently entered [track & field](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_at_the_Summer_Olympics) and [swimming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimming_at_the_Summer_Olympics) games at the [Summer Olympics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_Olympics) since [1968](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honduras_at_the_1968_Summer_Olympics) and [1984](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honduras_at_the_1984_Summer_Olympics), respectively.[\[154\]](../../page/5/#ref-154 "note 154")[519](../../519/ "tree and pragmatics") Occasionally, Honduras has competed in [combat sports](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_sport) ranging from [judo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judo) to [boxing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing) at the Summer Olympics as well.[\[155\]](../../page/5/#ref-155 "note 155")[\[156\]](../../page/5/#ref-156 "note 156")[520](../../520/ "tree and pragmatics") Gender inequality is present in the sports industry, as teams like the [Honduras women's national football team](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honduras_women%27s_national_football_team) ([Spanish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_language): Selección de fútbol de Honduras Femenina) has yet to qualify in global and continental tournaments and [softball](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softball) being nearly nonexistent in the country.[\[157\]](../../page/5/#ref-157 "note 157")[\[158\]](../../page/5/#ref-158 "note 158")[521](../../521/ "tree and pragmatics")
