### Climate

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [Climate of Myanmar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Myanmar)

Much of the country lies between the [Tropic of Cancer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropic_of_Cancer) and the [Equator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equator).[251](../../251/ "tree and pragmatics") It lies in the [monsoon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsoon) region of Asia, with its coastal regions receiving over 5000 mm of rain annually.[252](../../252/ "tree and pragmatics") Annual [rainfall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precipitation_%28meteorology%29) in the [delta](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_delta) region is approximately 2500 mm, while average annual rainfall in the dry zone in central Myanmar is less than 1000 mm.[253](../../253/ "tree and pragmatics") The northern regions of Myanmar are the coolest, with average temperatures of 21 C. Coastal and delta regions have an average maximum temperature of 32 C.[\[151\]](../../page/7/#ref-151 "note 151") Previously and currently analysed data, as well as future projections on changes caused by [climate change](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_in_Myanmar) predict serious consequences to development for all economic, productive, social, and environmental sectors in Myanmar.[\[155\]](../../page/7/#ref-155 "note 155")[254](../../254/ "tree and pragmatics") To combat the hardships ahead and do its part to help [combat climate change](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_climate_change) Myanmar has displayed interest in expanding its use of renewable energy and lowering its level of carbon emissions.[255](../../255/ "tree and pragmatics") Groups involved in helping Myanmar with the transition and move forward include the [UN Environment Programme](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UN_Environment_Programme), Myanmar Climate Change Alliance, and the [Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Natural_Resources_and_Environmental_Conservation), which directed the production of the final draft of the Myanmar national climate change policy that was presented to various sectors of the Myanmar government for review.[\[156\]](../../page/7/#ref-156 "note 156")[256](../../256/ "tree and pragmatics")

In April 2015, it was announced that the [World Bank](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Bank) and Myanmar would enter a full partnership framework aimed at improving access to electricity and other basic services for about six million people, and expected to benefit three million pregnant women and children through improved health services.[\[157\]](../../page/7/#ref-157 "note 157")[257](../../257/ "tree and pragmatics") Acquired funding and proper planning has allowed Myanmar to better prepare for the impacts of climate change by enacting programs which teach its people new farming methods, rebuild its infrastructure with materials resilient to natural disasters, and transition various sectors towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.[\[158\]](../../page/7/#ref-158 "note 158")[258](../../258/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Biodiversity

<!-- .mk -->
Further information: [Deforestation in Myanmar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deforestation_in_Myanmar), [List of protected areas of Myanmar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_protected_areas_of_Myanmar)

Myanmar is a [biodiverse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodiverse) country with more than 16,000 [plant](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plant), 314 [mammal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal), 1131 [bird](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird), 293 [reptile](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reptile), and 139 [amphibian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphibian) species, and 64 terrestrial [ecosystems](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecosystems) including tropical and subtropical vegetation, seasonally inundated wetlands, shoreline and tidal systems, and alpine ecosystems.[259](../../259/ "tree and pragmatics") Myanmar houses some of the largest intact natural ecosystems in [Southeast Asia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeast_Asia), but the remaining ecosystems are under threat from land use intensification and over-exploitation.[260](../../260/ "tree and pragmatics") According to the [IUCN Red List of Ecosystems](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IUCN_Red_List_of_Ecosystems) categories and criteria, more than a third of Myanmar's land area has been converted to [anthropogenic ecosystems](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropogenic_biome) over the last 2–3 centuries, and nearly half of its ecosystems are threatened.[261](../../261/ "tree and pragmatics") Despite large gaps in information for some ecosystems, there is a large potential to develop a comprehensive [protected area network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protected_area_network) that protects its terrestrial biodiversity.[\[159\]](../../page/7/#ref-159 "note 159")[262](../../262/ "tree and pragmatics")

Myanmar continues to perform badly in the global [Environmental Performance Index](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_Performance_Index) (EPI) with an overall ranking of 153 out of 180 countries in 2016, among the worst in the [South Asian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asia) region.[263](../../263/ "tree and pragmatics") The environmental areas where Myanmar performs worst (i.e., highest ranking) are [air quality](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_quality) (174), health impacts of [environmental issues](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_issues) (143), and [biodiversity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodiversity) and [habitat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitat) (142).[264](../../264/ "tree and pragmatics") Myanmar performs best (i.e., lowest ranking) in [environmental impacts of fisheries](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_impacts_of_fisheries) (21) but with declining [fish stocks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_stocks).[265](../../265/ "tree and pragmatics") Despite several issues, Myanmar also ranks 64 and scores very well (i.e., a high percentage of 93.73%) in environmental effects of the agricultural industry because of excellent management of the [nitrogen cycle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_cycle).[\[160\]](../../page/7/#ref-160 "note 160")[\[161\]](../../page/7/#ref-161 "note 161")[266](../../266/ "tree and pragmatics") Myanmar is one of the most highly vulnerable countries to [climate change](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change); this poses several social, political, economic and foreign policy challenges to the country.[\[162\]](../../page/7/#ref-162 "note 162")[267](../../267/ "tree and pragmatics")

Myanmar's slow economic growth has contributed to the preservation of much of its environment and ecosystems.[268](../../268/ "tree and pragmatics") [Forests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest), including dense tropical growth and valuable [teak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teak) in lower Myanmar, cover over 49% of the country, including areas of [acacia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acacia), [bamboo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo), [ironwood](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopea_odorata) and [Magnolia champaca](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnolia_champaca).[269](../../269/ "tree and pragmatics") [Coconut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut) and [betel palm](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betel_palm) and rubber have been introduced.[270](../../270/ "tree and pragmatics") In the [highlands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland) of the north, oak, pine, and various rhododendrons cover much of the land.[\[163\]](../../page/7/#ref-163 "note 163")[271](../../271/ "tree and pragmatics")

Heavy logging since the new 1995 forestry law went into effect has seriously reduced forest area and wildlife habitat.[\[164\]](../../page/7/#ref-164 "note 164")[272](../../272/ "tree and pragmatics") The lands along the coast support all varieties of tropical fruits and once had large areas of [mangroves](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar_Coast_mangroves) although much of the protective mangroves have disappeared.[273](../../273/ "tree and pragmatics") In much of central Myanmar (the dry zone), [vegetation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetation) is sparse and stunted.[274](../../274/ "tree and pragmatics")

Typical jungle animals, particularly [tigers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger), occur sparsely in Myanmar.[275](../../275/ "tree and pragmatics") In upper Myanmar, there are [rhinoceros](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros), [wild water buffalo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_water_buffalo), [clouded leopard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clouded_leopard), [wild boars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_boar), [deer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deer), [antelope](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antelope), and [elephants](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant), which are also tamed or bred in captivity for use as work animals, particularly in the [lumber industry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumber_industry).[276](../../276/ "tree and pragmatics") Smaller mammals are also numerous, ranging from [gibbons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibbon) and [monkeys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey) to [flying foxes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_foxes).[277](../../277/ "tree and pragmatics") The abundance of [birds](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird) is notable with over 800 species, including [parrots](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose-ringed_parakeet), [myna](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myna), [peafowl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peafowl), [red junglefowl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_junglefowl), [weaverbirds](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weaverbirds), [crows](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crow), [herons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heron), and [barn owl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_barn_owl).[278](../../278/ "tree and pragmatics") Among reptile species there are [crocodiles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile), [geckos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gecko), [cobras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra), [Burmese pythons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burmese_python), and [turtles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle).[279](../../279/ "tree and pragmatics") Hundreds of species of freshwater fish are wide-ranging, plentiful, and are very important food sources.[\[165\]](../../page/7/#ref-165 "note 165")[280](../../280/ "tree and pragmatics")

## Government and politics

Myanmar operates as a [unitary](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitary_state) [assembly-independent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly-independent) [republic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic) under its [2008 constitution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Constitution_of_Myanmar).[281](../../281/ "tree and pragmatics") The country is governed as a [parliamentary system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliamentary_system) with a [bicameral legislature](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicameral_legislature) (including an executive [president](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_Myanmar) accountable to the legislature), with 25% of the legislators appointed by the military and the rest elected in general elections.[\[166\]](../../page/7/#ref-166 "note 166")[282](../../282/ "tree and pragmatics")

The legislature, called the [Assembly of the Union](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly_of_the_Union), is bicameral and made up of two houses: The 224-seat upper [House of Nationalities](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Nationalities) and the 440-seat lower [House of Representatives](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Representatives_%28Myanmar%29).[283](../../283/ "tree and pragmatics") The upper house consists of 168 members who are directly elected and 56 who are appointed by the [Burmese Armed Forces](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burmese_Armed_Forces).[284](../../284/ "tree and pragmatics") The lower house consists of 330 members who are directly elected and 110 who are appointed by the armed forces.[285](../../285/ "tree and pragmatics") The President of Myanmar acts as the [head of state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_of_state) and the [head of government](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_of_government) and is elected by the Assembly of the Union.[\[166\]](../../page/7/#ref-166 "note 166")[286](../../286/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Political culture

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [Politics of Myanmar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_Myanmar)

The major political party is the military-backed [Union Solidarity and Development Party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Solidarity_and_Development_Party).[287](../../287/ "tree and pragmatics") The [National League for Democracy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_League_for_Democracy) was previously a major political party, but it was banned by the junta government in 2023.[\[167\]](../../page/7/#ref-167 "note 167")[288](../../288/ "tree and pragmatics")

Myanmar's army-drafted constitution was approved in a [referendum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Burmese_constitutional_referendum) in May 2008.[289](../../289/ "tree and pragmatics") The results, 92.4% of the 22 million voters with an official turnout of 99%, are considered suspect by many international observers and by the National League of Democracy with reports of widespread [fraud](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_fraud), ballot stuffing, and voter intimidation.[\[168\]](../../page/7/#ref-168 "note 168")[290](../../290/ "tree and pragmatics") The [elections of 2010](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Myanmar_general_election) resulted in a victory for the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party.[291](../../291/ "tree and pragmatics") Various foreign observers questioned the fairness of the elections.[\[113\]](../../page/7/#ref-113 "note 113")[\[169\]](../../page/7/#ref-169 "note 169")[\[170\]](../../page/7/#ref-170 "note 170")[292](../../292/ "tree and pragmatics") One criticism of the election was that only government-sanctioned political parties were allowed to contest in it and the popular [National League for Democracy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_League_for_Democracy) was declared illegal.[\[171\]](../../page/7/#ref-171 "note 171")[293](../../293/ "tree and pragmatics") However, immediately following the elections, the government ended the house arrest of the democracy advocate and leader of the National League for Democracy, [Aung San Suu Kyi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aung_San_Suu_Kyi),[\[172\]](../../page/7/#ref-172 "note 172") and her ability to move freely around the country is considered an important test of the military's movement toward more openness.[\[171\]](../../page/7/#ref-171 "note 171")[294](../../294/ "tree and pragmatics")

The Tatmadaw again seized power in a [2021 coup d'état](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Myanmar_coup_d%27état), which led to the rule of the [National Defence and Security Council](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Defence_and_Security_Council_%28Myanmar%29) (NDSC) and its new military junta, the [State Administration Council](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Administration_Council) (SAC).[\[138\]](../../page/7/#ref-138 "note 138")[295](../../295/ "tree and pragmatics") The coup, which was widely condemned by the [international community](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_community), led to [continuous ongoing widespread protests in Myanmar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021–2022_Myanmar_protests) and has been marked by violent [political repression](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_repression) by the military, as well as the outbreak of a [civil war](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar_civil_war_%282021–present%29).[\[173\]](../../page/7/#ref-173 "note 173")[296](../../296/ "tree and pragmatics") The military again arrested Aung San Suu Kyi to remove her from public life, and charged her with crimes ranging from [corruption](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_in_Myanmar) to violation of [COVID-19](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Myanmar) protocols; all of the charges against her are "politically motivated" according to independent observers.[\[174\]](../../page/7/#ref-174 "note 174")[297](../../297/ "tree and pragmatics") The SAC imposed a state of emergency from 2021 to 2025, after which it transferred power back to the NDSC.[298](../../298/ "tree and pragmatics") In the [V-Dem Democracy Indices](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-Dem_Democracy_Indices), Myanmar ranks amongst the lowest as a "closed autocracy," ranking at 174th and 176th out of 179 countries in electoral democracy and liberal democracy indices respectively.[\[175\]](../../page/7/#ref-175 "note 175")[299](../../299/ "tree and pragmatics") The country transitioned to a nominally civilian government in 2026 after [elections](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025–26_Myanmar_general_election) described as a sham process intended to legitimise further military rule.[\[176\]](../../page/7/#ref-176 "note 176")[\[177\]](../../page/7/#ref-177 "note 177")[\[178\]](../../page/7/#ref-178 "note 178")[\[179\]](../../page/7/#ref-179 "note 179")[300](../../300/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Foreign relations

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [Foreign relations of Myanmar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_relations_of_Myanmar)

Though the country's foreign relations, particularly with [Western nations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_nations), have historically been strained, the situation has markedly improved since the reforms following the 2010 elections.[\[180\]](../../page/7/#ref-180 "note 180")[301](../../301/ "tree and pragmatics") After years of diplomatic isolation and economic and military sanctions,[\[181\]](../../page/7/#ref-181 "note 181") the United States relaxed curbs on foreign aid to Myanmar in November 2011[\[117\]](../../page/7/#ref-117 "note 117") and announced the resumption of diplomatic relations on 13 January 2012[\[182\]](../../page/7/#ref-182 "note 182") The [European Union](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union) has placed sanctions on Myanmar, including an [arms embargo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arms_embargo), cessation of [trade preferences](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_preference), and suspension of all aid with the exception of [humanitarian aid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanitarian_aid).[\[183\]](../../page/7/#ref-183 "note 183")[302](../../302/ "tree and pragmatics")

Sanctions imposed by the United States and European countries against the former military government, coupled with boycotts and other direct pressure on corporations by supporters of the democracy movement, have resulted in the withdrawal from the country of most U.S. and many European companies.[\[184\]](../../page/7/#ref-184 "note 184")[303](../../303/ "tree and pragmatics") Despite Western isolation, Asian corporations have generally remained willing to continue investing in the country and to initiate new investments, particularly in natural resource extraction.[304](../../304/ "tree and pragmatics") The country has close relations with neighbouring India and China, with several Indian and Chinese companies operating in the country.[305](../../305/ "tree and pragmatics") Under India's [Act East policy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_East_policy_%28India%29), fields of co-operation between India and Myanmar include [remote sensing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_sensing),[\[185\]](../../page/7/#ref-185 "note 185") oil and gas exploration,[\[186\]](../../page/7/#ref-186 "note 186") information technology,[\[187\]](../../page/7/#ref-187 "note 187") hydropower[\[188\]](../../page/7/#ref-188 "note 188") and construction of ports and buildings.[\[189\]](../../page/7/#ref-189 "note 189")[306](../../306/ "tree and pragmatics") Myanmar also has close political relations with Vietnam[\[190\]](../../page/7/#ref-190 "note 190") and Japan.[\[191\]](../../page/7/#ref-191 "note 191")[\[192\]](../../page/7/#ref-192 "note 192")[307](../../307/ "tree and pragmatics")

In June 2013, Myanmar held its first ever summit, the [World Economic Forum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Economic_Forum) on East Asia 2013.[308](../../308/ "tree and pragmatics") A regional spinoff of the annual [World Economic Forum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Economic_Forum) in [Davos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davos), Switzerland, the summit was held on 5–7 June and attended by 1,200 participants, including 10 heads of state, 12 ministers and 40 senior directors from around the world.[\[193\]](../../page/7/#ref-193 "note 193")[309](../../309/ "tree and pragmatics")

On 19 January 2025, Reuters reported that [ASEAN](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASEAN) had told Myanmar's military government to prioritise ceasefire, "urging the junta to start dialogue and end hostilities immediately" and "to allow unhindered humanitarian access", citing Malaysia's foreign minister [Mohamad Hasan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamad_Hasan_%28politician%29).[\[194\]](../../page/7/#ref-194 "note 194")[310](../../310/ "tree and pragmatics") The ASEAN chair's statement denounced "the continued acts of violence against civilians and public facilities and urged all parties involved" to "immediately halt indiscriminate violence, exercise utmost restraint, ensure the protection and safety of all civilians and civilian infrastructures, and create a conducive environment for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and inclusive national dialogue".[\[195\]](../../page/7/#ref-195 "note 195")[311](../../311/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Military

<!-- .mk -->
Main article: [Armed forces of Myanmar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_forces_of_Myanmar)

Since the late 1950s, Myanmar's military has had major roles in Myanmar's politics.[\[196\]](../../page/7/#ref-196 "note 196")[312](../../312/ "tree and pragmatics") Myanmar has received extensive military aid from China in the past.[\[197\]](../../page/7/#ref-197 "note 197")[313](../../313/ "tree and pragmatics") Myanmar has been a member of ASEAN since 1997.[314](../../314/ "tree and pragmatics") Though it gave up its turn to hold the ASEAN chair and host the [ASEAN Summit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASEAN_Summit) in 2006, it chaired the forum and hosted the summit in 2014.[\[198\]](../../page/7/#ref-198 "note 198")[315](../../315/ "tree and pragmatics") In November 2008, Myanmar's political situation with neighbouring Bangladesh became tense as they began searching for natural gas in a disputed block of the Bay of Bengal.[\[198\]](../../page/7/#ref-198 "note 198")[316](../../316/ "tree and pragmatics") Controversy surrounding the Rohingya population also remains an issue between Bangladesh and Myanmar.[\[199\]](../../page/7/#ref-199 "note 199")[317](../../317/ "tree and pragmatics")
