Slovakia hosted the [2011 IIHF World Championship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_IIHF_World_Championship), where [Finland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland_men%27s_national_ice_hockey_team) won the gold medal and [2019 IIHF World Championship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_IIHF_World_Championship), where [Finland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland_men%27s_national_ice_hockey_team) also won the gold medal.[657](../../657/ "tree and pragmatics") Both competitions took place in [Bratislava](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bratislava) [corpus](../../../Bratislava/ "in our corpus") and [Košice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Košice).[\[277\]](../../page/7/#ref-277 "note 277")[658](../../658/ "tree and pragmatics")

Football is the most popular sport in Slovakia, with over 400,000 registered players.[659](../../659/ "tree and pragmatics") Since 1993, the [Slovak national football team](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovak_national_football_team) has qualified for the [FIFA World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup) once, in [2010](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup).[660](../../660/ "tree and pragmatics") They progressed to the last 16, where they were defeated by the [Netherlands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands_national_football_team).[661](../../661/ "tree and pragmatics") The most notable result was the 3–2 victory over [Italy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy_national_football_team).[662](../../662/ "tree and pragmatics") In 2015, the [Slovak national football team](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovak_national_football_team) qualified for the [UEFA Euro 2016](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2016) tournament, under head coach [Ján Kozák](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ján_Kozák_%28footballer,_born_1954%29).[663](../../663/ "tree and pragmatics") This helped the team reach its best-ever position of 14th in the [FIFA World Rankings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Rankings).[\[278\]](../../page/7/#ref-278 "note 278")[664](../../664/ "tree and pragmatics")

In club competitions, only three teams have qualified for the [UEFA Champions League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League) Group Stage, namely [MFK Košice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MFK_Košice) in [1997–98](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997–98_UEFA_Champions_League), [FC Artmedia Bratislava](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Artmedia_Bratislava) in [2005–06 season](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005–06_UEFA_Champions_League), and [MŠK Žilina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MŠK_Žilina) in [2010–11](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010–11_UEFA_Champions_League).[665](../../665/ "tree and pragmatics") FC Artmedia Bratislava has been the most successful team, finishing third at the Group Stage of the [UEFA Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005–06_UEFA_Cup), therefore qualifying for the knockout stage.[666](../../666/ "tree and pragmatics") They remain the only Slovak club that has won a match at the group stage.[667](../../667/ "tree and pragmatics")
