## Landmarks

Although most of the ancient city was destroyed during the [1917 revolution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Revolution_of_1917) and the 1966 earthquake, Tashkent has many museums and Soviet-era monuments:[223](../../223/ "tree and pragmatics")

- [Chorsu Bazaar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chorsu_Bazaar), located near the Kukeldash Madrasah, is an open-air [bazaar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bazaar) in the centre of the old town of Tashkent.[227](../../227/ "tree and pragmatics")

The Russian Orthodox church in Amir Timur Square, built in 1898, was demolished in 2009.[258](../../258/ "tree and pragmatics") The building had not been allowed to be used for religious purposes since the 1920s, due to the anti-religious campaign conducted across the former Soviet Union by the Bolshevik government in Moscow.[259](../../259/ "tree and pragmatics") During the Soviet period, the building was used for various non-religious purposes; after independence, it became a bank.[260](../../260/ "tree and pragmatics")

Tashkent also has a Second World War memorial park and a Defender of the Motherland monument.[\[80\]](../../page/3/#ref-80 "note 80")[\[81\]](../../page/3/#ref-81 "note 81")[261](../../261/ "tree and pragmatics")
