## Infrastructure

### Transport

#### Air

Tirana is served by [Nënë Tereza International Airport](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tirana_International_Airport_Nënë_Tereza), which is the main air gateway to the country.[165](../../165/ "tree and pragmatics") The airport was officially named in honour of the Albanian Roman Catholic nun and missionary, Mother Teresa.[166](../../166/ "tree and pragmatics") It connects Tirana with destinations across Europe, Africa, and Asia.[167](../../167/ "tree and pragmatics") The airport carried more than 3.3 million passengers in 2019.[168](../../168/ "tree and pragmatics")

#### Road

Tirana's geographical location in the centre of Albania has long established the city as the core terminus for the [national road network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roads_in_Albania), thus connecting the city to all parts of Albania and neighbouring countries.[\[103\]](../../page/4/#ref-103 "note 103")[169](../../169/ "tree and pragmatics") The [Rruga Shtetërore 1](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SH_1_%28Albania%29) (SH1) connects Tirana with [Shkodër](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shkodër) and [Montenegro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montenegro) [corpus](../../../Montenegro/ "in our corpus") in the north, and constitutes a key section of the proposed [Adriatic–Ionian motorway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adriatic–Ionian_motorway).[170](../../170/ "tree and pragmatics") The [Rruga Shtetërore 2](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SH_2_%28Albania%29) (SH2) continues in the west and provides direct connection to Durrës on the Adriatic Sea.[171](../../171/ "tree and pragmatics") The Rruga Shtetërore 3 (SH3) is being transformed into the [Autostrada 3](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A3_%28Albania%29) (A3) and follows the ancient [Via Egnatia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_Egnatia).[172](../../172/ "tree and pragmatics") It is a significant section of the [Pan-European Corridor VIII](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-European_Corridor_VIII) and links the city with [Elbasan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbasan), Korçë and Greece in the south.[173](../../173/ "tree and pragmatics") Tirana is further connected, through the Milot interchange in the northwest, with [Kosovo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosovo) [corpus](../../../Kosovo/ "in our corpus") as part of the [Autostrada 1](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A1_motorway_%28Albania%29) (A1).[174](../../174/ "tree and pragmatics")

During the [communist regime in Albania](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism_in_Albania), a plan for the construction of a [ring road](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_road) around Tirana arose in 1989 but implementation was delayed until the 2010s.[\[104\]](../../page/4/#ref-104 "note 104")[175](../../175/ "tree and pragmatics") It is of major importance, especially concerning demographic growth of the Tirana region as well as the Albanian economy.[176](../../176/ "tree and pragmatics") Although, constructions for the now completed southern section of the ring road started in 2011, the northern and eastern sections are still in the planning process.[\[105\]](../../page/4/#ref-105 "note 105")[177](../../177/ "tree and pragmatics")

#### Rail

Rail lines of [Hekurudha Shqiptare](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hekurudha_Shqiptare) (HSH) connected Tirana with all of the major cities of Albania, including Durrës, Shkodër and Vlorë.[178](../../178/ "tree and pragmatics") In 2013, the [Tirana Railway Station](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tirana_Railway_Station) was closed and moved to Kashar by the city government in order to create space for the New Boulevard (Bulevardi i Ri) project.[\[106\]](../../page/4/#ref-106 "note 106")[179](../../179/ "tree and pragmatics") The new Tirana Station will be constructed in [Laprakë](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laprakë), which is projected to be a multifunctional terminal for rail, tram and bus transportation.[\[107\]](../../page/4/#ref-107 "note 107")[\[108\]](../../page/4/#ref-108 "note 108")[180](../../180/ "tree and pragmatics") City officials have discussed a light rail extension to the location of the former rail station.[\[109\]](../../page/4/#ref-109 "note 109")[181](../../181/ "tree and pragmatics") Construction is underway on a new rail line from Tirana to Nënë Tereza International Airport and Durrës.[\[109\]](../../page/4/#ref-109 "note 109")[182](../../182/ "tree and pragmatics")

In 2012, the Tirana municipality published a report that construction of two tram lines was under evaluation.[183](../../183/ "tree and pragmatics") The tram lines would have a total length of 16.7 km.[184](../../184/ "tree and pragmatics") That plan was never implemented.[185](../../185/ "tree and pragmatics") Under the plan, the two tram lines would have intersected in Skanderbeg Square.[186](../../186/ "tree and pragmatics") Public transport in Tirana is, for now, focused only in the city centre, people living in the suburbs have fewer or no public transport connections.[\[110\]](../../page/4/#ref-110 "note 110")[187](../../187/ "tree and pragmatics")

#### Bus

Tirana's bus network is its primary and only system of public transport.[188](../../188/ "tree and pragmatics") The system has 16 lines serving the urban core, with another 14 suburban lines serving its outer regions.[189](../../189/ "tree and pragmatics") The urban network is made up of 8 radial lines, 5 diagonal lines, and 3 circular or semi-circular lines.[\[111\]](../../page/4/#ref-111 "note 111")[190](../../190/ "tree and pragmatics")

Busses often get stuck in traffic.[191](../../191/ "tree and pragmatics") There were only 7 km of dedicated bus lines in 2020.[\[111\]](../../page/4/#ref-111 "note 111")[192](../../192/ "tree and pragmatics")

There were 451 bus stops on the entire urban network in 2020, extending to over 170 km.[193](../../193/ "tree and pragmatics") Services operate every day, regardless of holidays and weekends, from 06:00 to 24:00.[194](../../194/ "tree and pragmatics") The entire network had an average [headway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headway) of 9 minutes on a daily basis in 2018 and in the first half of 2019.[\[111\]](../../page/4/#ref-111 "note 111")[195](../../195/ "tree and pragmatics")

Nearly 257,000 residents lived within a 150 m walking area from a bus stop when surveyed in Tirana’s strategic transport study in 2019.[196](../../196/ "tree and pragmatics") That was approximately 35% of the population living inside the Municipal unit of Tirana.[\[111\]](../../page/4/#ref-111 "note 111")[197](../../197/ "tree and pragmatics")

A single-ride ticket costs 40 Lek, and no hourly or daily options are available.[198](../../198/ "tree and pragmatics") Disabled people and veterans may ride for free.[199](../../199/ "tree and pragmatics") An electronic ticketing system is under implementation.[\[111\]](../../page/4/#ref-111 "note 111")[200](../../200/ "tree and pragmatics")

#### Cycling

During the administration of mayor Erion Veliaj, the government of Tirana has significantly increased the creation and expansion of a [cycling infrastructure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycling_infrastructure) in the city in order to reduce [traffic congestion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_congestion) as well as to improve the [sustainable transportation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_transport).[\[112\]](../../page/4/#ref-112 "note 112")[\[113\]](../../page/4/#ref-113 "note 113")[\[114\]](../../page/4/#ref-114 "note 114")[201](../../201/ "tree and pragmatics") [Ecovolis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecovolis) was launched in 2011 offering rental services for [bicycles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle) at different centrally located stations for a small fee.[\[115\]](../../page/4/#ref-115 "note 115")[\[116\]](../../page/4/#ref-116 "note 116")[202](../../202/ "tree and pragmatics") The international [bicycle sharing system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_sharing_system), [Mobike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobike), launched its operations on 8 June 2018 by deploying 4000 bicycles in the city.[\[117\]](../../page/4/#ref-117 "note 117")[\[118\]](../../page/4/#ref-118 "note 118")[203](../../203/ "tree and pragmatics") Both services were discontinued.[204](../../204/ "tree and pragmatics")

Safe cycling paths are still relatively rare, despite improvements in recent years.[205](../../205/ "tree and pragmatics") Paths are often blocked by parked cars or construction.[206](../../206/ "tree and pragmatics") Other obstructions which decrease ride quality, such as drain holes, are also prevalent.[207](../../207/ "tree and pragmatics") There were only around 30 km of cycling routes in 2020.[\[111\]](../../page/4/#ref-111 "note 111")[208](../../208/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Education

Tirana has the highest concentration of institutions of [tertiary education](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tertiary_education) in Albania, consisting of numerous [academies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy), [colleges](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College) and [universities](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universities).[209](../../209/ "tree and pragmatics") Most prominent among these is the University of Tirana with campuses around the city and more than 28,000 students from all backgrounds.[\[119\]](../../page/4/#ref-119 "note 119")[210](../../210/ "tree and pragmatics") The [Polytechnic University of Tirana](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polytechnic_University_of_Tirana) is another distinguished institution and also the most renowned engineering and technical university in the country.[211](../../211/ "tree and pragmatics") The four other public institutions in Tirana are the [University of Arts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Arts_%28Albania%29), [University of Agriculture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agricultural_University_of_Tirana), [University of Medicine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Medicine,_Tirana) and [University of Sports](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_University_of_Tirana).[\[119\]](../../page/4/#ref-119 "note 119")[212](../../212/ "tree and pragmatics")

The educational system of Tirana has expanded substantially over the past years with the renovations of existing school facilities and the construction of new schools.[\[120\]](../../page/4/#ref-120 "note 120")[\[121\]](../../page/4/#ref-121 "note 121")[213](../../213/ "tree and pragmatics") For [primary](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_education) and [secondary](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_education) education, a variety of schools are available, tagged with the public, private and international labels.[214](../../214/ "tree and pragmatics") Some of the international schools are the [Tirana International School](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tirana_International_School), Albanian International School, British School, Montessori School, Memorial School and World Academy.[215](../../215/ "tree and pragmatics") The public primary and secondary Servete Maçi School won an award at the 2020 [International Architecture Awards](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Architecture_Awards).[\[122\]](../../page/4/#ref-122 "note 122")[216](../../216/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Health

There are numerous public and private [hospitals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospital) as well as smaller public and private [health care facilities](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_facilities) in the territory of Tirana.[217](../../217/ "tree and pragmatics") The [Mother Teresa University Hospital](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_Medical_Centre_of_Tirana_%22Mother_Teresa%22) is one of the largest medical tertiary institutions of the country.[218](../../218/ "tree and pragmatics") Other medical institutions include the [Shefqet Ndroqi University Hospital](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_Hospital_%22Shefqet_Ndroqi%22), Koço Gliozheni Hospital, Mbretëresha Gjeraldinë Hospital and the [Military Hospital](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tirana_Military_Hospital).[219](../../219/ "tree and pragmatics")

## Demography

According to the 2023 census, the municipality of Tirana had 598,176 residents, of whom 583,963 were born in Albania and 14,213 abroad.[220](../../220/ "tree and pragmatics") With a population density of 502 people per square kilometre, Tirana is the most densely populated municipality in the country.[\[5\]](../../page/4/#ref-5 "note 5")[221](../../221/ "tree and pragmatics") The encompassing [metropolitan area](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_area), consisting of the regions of Durrës and Tirana, has a combined population of approximately 1 million, amounting to nearly one third of the country's total population.[\[123\]](../../page/4/#ref-123 "note 123")[222](../../222/ "tree and pragmatics")

Historically, Tirana has experienced a steady population increase, especially after the fall of communism in the late twentieth century as well as the beginning of the twenty-first century.[223](../../223/ "tree and pragmatics") The remarkable growth was, and still is, largely fuelled by migrants from all over the country, often in search of [employment](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employment) and improved living conditions.[224](../../224/ "tree and pragmatics") Between 1820 and 1955, the population of Tirana tenfolded, while during the period from 1989 to 2011 the city's population grew annually by approximately 2.7%.[225](../../225/ "tree and pragmatics") In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city had a rate of growth of less than 1% annually until the 1970s, then down to less than 8% per year until the middle 20th century figures.[\[124\]](../../page/4/#ref-124 "note 124")[226](../../226/ "tree and pragmatics")

Among residents born in Albania, the majority were born in Tirana itself (310,084), but the municipality has long been the principal internal migration destination in the country.[227](../../227/ "tree and pragmatics") Large communities trace their birthplace to Dibër (38,612), Korçë (35,667), Fier (30,290), Berat (30,254), Kukës (27,246), Elbasan (26,258) and Gjirokastër (25,885), with additional groups from Shkodër (18,226), Vlorë (15,599), Durrës (14,371) and Lezhë (11,471).[228](../../228/ "tree and pragmatics") The inflows from north-eastern mountainous prefectures such as Dibër and Kukës, from the south-eastern and southern interior around Korçë, Berat, Gjirokastër and Elbasan, and from coastal areas including Durrës, Vlorë and Lezhë illustrate a predominantly rural-to-urban and intra-regional migration pattern oriented toward the capital.[229](../../229/ "tree and pragmatics") These movements intensified after the early 1990s, when internal mobility restrictions were lifted, and include both long-distance migration from remote highland municipalities and short-distance relocation within central Albania.[230](../../230/ "tree and pragmatics") The resulting settlement pattern combines older urban neighbourhoods with rapidly urbanised former rural areas on the city’s outskirts and along main transport corridors.[231](../../231/ "tree and pragmatics") This wide geographic spread reflects the city’s dominant role as Albania’s administrative, educational and economic centre and has contributed to its rapid demographic expansion and increasing social diversity since the early 1990s.[\[125\]](../../page/4/#ref-125 "note 125")[232](../../232/ "tree and pragmatics")

According to the 2023 Population and Housing Census profile for [Tirana County](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tirana_County), the population is predominantly of [Albanian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albanians) ethnicity (91.0%), followed by small minorities of [Greeks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeks_in_Albania) (0.26%), [Aromanians (Vlachs)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aromanians) (0.10%), [Macedonians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonians_%28ethnic_group%29) (0.06%), [Montenegrins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montenegrins) (0.03%), [Roma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_people_in_Albania) (0.22%), [Egyptians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkali_and_Balkan_Egyptians) (0.13%), [Bosniaks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosniaks), [Serbs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbs_in_Albania), [Bulgarians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarians_in_Albania) and [Italians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italians_in_Albania) (each below 0.05%).[233](../../233/ "tree and pragmatics") About 8% of residents did not declare or provided no ethnic affiliation.[234](../../234/ "tree and pragmatics") The majority of inhabitants reported [Albanian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albanian_language) as their mother tongue (94.7%), with smaller proportions declaring [Greek](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language) (0.4%), [Aromanian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aromanian_language) (0.2%), or other and multiple languages (1.1%).[\[126\]](../../page/4/#ref-126 "note 126")[235](../../235/ "tree and pragmatics")

The [life expectancy at birth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_expectancy) in Tirana is 82.8 years, 84.5 years for women and 81 years for men,[\[127\]](../../page/4/#ref-127 "note 127") exceeding that of wealthier capital cities in [Western Europe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Europe) such as [Vienna](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna) [corpus](../../../Vienna/ "in our corpus")[\[128\]](../../page/4/#ref-128 "note 128") and [Berlin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin) [corpus](../../../Berlin/ "in our corpus").[\[129\]](../../page/4/#ref-129 "note 129")[236](../../236/ "tree and pragmatics")

### Religion in Tirana

In Albania, a [secular state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secular_state) with no [state religion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_religion), the freedom of [belief](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_belief), [conscience](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_conscience) and [religion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_religion) is explicitly guaranteed in the [constitution of Albania](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_of_Albania).[\[130\]](../../page/4/#ref-130 "note 130")[\[131\]](../../page/4/#ref-131 "note 131")[237](../../237/ "tree and pragmatics") Tirana is religiously diverse and has many places of worship catering to its religious population whom are adherents of [Islam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam), [Christianity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity) and [Judaism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism) but also of [Atheism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism) and [Agnosticism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnosticism).[238](../../238/ "tree and pragmatics") They all maintain their Albanian headquarters spread across the territory of Tirana.[239](../../239/ "tree and pragmatics") Nevertheless, the [Bektashi Order](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bektashi_Order) leadership established their world centre also in the city.[240](../../240/ "tree and pragmatics")
