In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Old use meaning "command" or "tell." God bids Jonah go to Nineveh, and Isaiah is told to bid Jerusalem take heart. Interpretation: God tells Moses to command Israel to wear fringes (tzitzit), which tradition says remind them of all the commandments. The Isaiah verse is read as God's comfort to Jerusalem, and is read in the weeks after Tisha B'Av. In the primary lessons: in tales a hero bids farewell to his family before a journey; «bid» can mean command or ask; in sales it means offer a price
