### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah it means a "holy convocation," a day when the people are called together for worship and rest, as on the Sabbath and the festivals. No ordinary work is done. Isaiah says God cannot bear such gatherings when they are joined with wrongdoing. Interpretation: Tradition treats these days as sacred appointed times when Israel gathers before God, and the law forbids "servile work" on them, with food preparation usually allowed on festivals. Isaiah's words are read as teaching that worship without justice is not wanted.
