In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In Jacob's words it means a secret meeting or plan of a group. Elsewhere it means a gathering that gives advice, even God's own heavenly circle, and in Judges the people's meeting to decide. Interpretation: Jacob refuses to join the secret plans of Simeon and Levi, which tradition reads as his rejection of their violence at Shechem.
