### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah a covenant is a binding bond between God and people, often with a sign, such as the rainbow, circumcision, or the Sabbath. It can also be a treaty between people. Interpretation: Tradition counts several covenants: with Noah, with Abraham (circumcision), and with Israel at Sinai. Jews see these as the base of their relationship with God, and the Torah warns against making covenants with idol worshippers. In the primary lessons: In RE the rainbow is the sign of God's covenant with Noah never to flood the earth again; circumcision is a sign of the covenant with Abraham; the Ark of the Covenant held the Ten Commandments. Christians speak of the "new covenant" through Jesus. Adults may sign a covenant when buying land or giving to charity. Phrases: make a covenant, keep the covenant, the Ark of the Covenant, the new covenant.
