# en

«en» in Mova's judaism dictionary: **«in» or «to» with countries and months, and «in» or «by»…** — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples, with 5 sentences of Mova's corpora that use it.

### part of speech

preposition and pronoun (French «en» = in, to, of it); noun (an en, ens — printing: en dash); in phrases «en route», «en masse» — not an English word on its own

### meaning for a pupil

1) (French) «En» means «in» or «to» with countries and months, and «in» or «by» for ways of travelling: «en France» (in France), «en été» (in summer), «en bus» (by bus). [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/E/en/#m1)

2) (French) «En» also means «some» or «of it»: «j'en veux» means «I want some». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/E/en/#m2)

3) English borrows French phrases: «en route» (on the way), «en masse» (all together in a big group). [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/E/en/#m3)

4) (printing) An «en dash» (–) is a dash about the width of the letter n. To an English ear French «en» sounds like a nasal «on». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/E/en/#m4)

5) En can also mean "and" in some old country speech, as in "Brer Rabbit en Brer Fox." [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/E/en/#m5)

### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah, En-mishpat ("spring of judgment") is another name for Kadesh. Here "En" is a place name, not the French word. In the primary lessons: In French lessons «en» comes with countries («je vais en Espagne» – I'm going to Spain), seasons and transport. English phrases with «en» appear in stories and news: «en route to school», «the fans arrived en masse». In English typing, the en dash is used in number ranges: «pages 4–9».
