In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah the firstborn son was due special rights and a double share, and the firstborn belonged to God. Interpretation: Jewish law has the firstborn son "redeemed" with five silver coins a month after birth, and firstborn males fast on the day before Passover in memory of the plague on Egypt.
