In the primary lessons: Temperature that rises by degrees, or cooking time; sometimes a round of a race. In science: heat makes ice melt and water boil; metal lets heat through fast, wool keeps it in. In safety: heat from a stove or the sun can burn; drink water in the heat. Phrases: «heat up», «in the heat», «heatwave», «central heating».

### note

Heating raises the temperature (add); cooling lowers it (take away). Trap: the change is the end temperature minus the start. In science, heat and temperature are not the same: a bath of warm water has more heat than a cup of hot tea. Never touch a pan to see if it is hot.
