### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Tanakh it means hard work, as in six days of work, and the heavy toil forced on Israel in Egypt. In Job, Psalms and Ecclesiastes it also means the daily work of a person, and sometimes work that seems useless. Interpretation: The commandment to labour six days is paired with resting on the seventh, so the Sabbath is read as teaching that both work and rest are holy. Psalm 104 is read as showing a natural order in which people work by day and rest at night, and Job's "labour in vain" as a cry of a person who feels unjustly judged. In the primary lessons: In history lessons, child labour means children doing hard jobs for little pay. In maths, labour costs are what you pay workers: hours × rate. In everyday life «go into labour» means start giving birth. Phrases: hard labour, child labour, manual labour, labour costs, in labour, labour of love, Labour Party.
