### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Usually "the land" means the land of Canaan, promised by God to Abraham and his children. Sometimes it means Egypt or another country, or the earth itself. The prophets and Joshua also speak of the land having rest after war or being cleansed. Interpretation: Jewish tradition holds the Land of Israel as a holy gift of God to the Jewish people, tied to the commandments. Some commandments, like the Sabbatical year, apply only there. "The land had rest" in Joshua and Judges is read as the peace that came when the people were faithful.
