### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the flood story, the waters grew stronger and rose over the earth. In Kings, Chronicles and the Psalms it means to win, to be stronger or to have one's way, as a king's word prevailed or as Asa prays that no man may prevail against God. Interpretation: The prophets and Chronicles are read as teaching that victory comes from God, not from human strength. Asa's prayer shows trust that God alone is stronger than any man. In the primary lessons: In stories good often «prevails over» evil. In geography, the «prevailing wind» is the wind that blows most often in a place. In formal speech: «Common sense prevailed.» Phrases: «justice prevailed», «prevailing wind», «prevail upon someone».
