# proofread

«proofread» in Mova's judaism dictionary: **To read a piece of writing carefully to find and correct…** — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

### part of speech

verb (proofread, proofreads, proofread, proofreading)

### meaning for a pupil

To read a piece of writing carefully to find and correct mistakes in spelling, punctuation and grammar before it is finished or printed. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/P/proofread/#m1)

### sense in the lessons

In English lessons pupils are told to proofread their work before handing it in: check capital letters, full stops, spelling and missing words. Proofreading is the last step of the writing process (plan, draft, revise, edit, proofread). Phrases: proofread your work, a proofreader, proofreading marks.

Past tense: proofread (spelled the same, but said "proof-red"). Also written proof-read. Noun for the person: proofreader. Trap: a spellchecker cannot catch homophones (their/there, to/too), so you still need to proofread yourself.
