# roi

«roi» in Mova's judaism dictionary: **the French word for king, as in «le roi» (the king); it…** — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples, with 2 sentences of Mova's corpora that use it.

### part of speech

noun (French: le roi, les rois); (abbreviation in English) ROI

### meaning for a pupil

1) (French) Roi is the French word for king, as in «le roi» (the king); it is not an English word. To an English ear it sounds like «rwah». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/R/roi/#m1)

2) (business, abbreviation) In English, ROI (written in capitals) stands for «return on investment»: how much money you get back compared with what you spent. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/R/roi/#m2)

### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In "Beer-lahai-roi" it is a Hebrew word meaning "who sees me," part of a well's name. Interpretation: Tradition reads the name as Hagar's discovery that God sees her trouble, so the well recalls that God sees the lowly. In the primary lessons: In French lessons it comes in «le roi et la reine» (the king and the queen) and in the Epiphany cake «la galette des rois» (the kings' cake). In English it only appears as the business abbreviation ROI. The French word also hides inside English «Detroit» and «Leroy» (le roi).
