### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: The Red Sea is the sea that split for Israel. In the food laws it is the place where fish with fins and scales live. In Solomon's Temple the "sea" was a huge bronze basin for the priests' washing, set on twelve oxen. In Job and Isaiah the sea is also a wild place of springs and depths. Interpretation: The rabbis tell that the sea parted for Israel, and the event is remembered each day in prayer and especially at Passover. The twelve oxen under the bronze sea are read as standing for the twelve tribes. In the primary lessons: In science and geography, the sea is salty; seas and oceans are home to fish, whales and plants; the Moon causes tides. In safety: swim between the flags, watch for rip currents, never swim alone. Phrases: at sea, by the sea, seaside, seashell, sea level, out to sea, all at sea (confused).
