### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah it can mean language or spoken words. At Babel all people had one speech. In the Psalms creation itself "utters speech" without words, telling of God's glory, and Job uses it for a person's words. Interpretation: Tradition reads Babel as people's shared speech being broken up as a lesson in pride. Speech also marks humans as special among creatures, and Psalm 19 is read as the heavens praising God. In the primary lessons: In English lessons pupils learn direct speech with speech marks and «reported speech», and give speeches in class. In everyday life presidents, head teachers and winners make speeches. Phrases: «give a speech», «make a speech», «speech marks», «freedom of speech», «parts of speech», «speech bubble».
