### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: "Strained" means pulled or wrenched, as Jacob's thigh was hurt in the struggle. In Isaiah, "strain not to comfort me" means do not try hard or press yourselves. Interpretation: Because of Jacob's hurt thigh from wrestling with the angel, Jews traditionally do not eat the sciatic nerve (gid hanasheh) of an animal. Jacob is also given the new name Israel, "one who struggles with God." Isaiah's words are read as a prophet's deep grief over his people's fall. In the primary lessons: In PE and health, warming up helps stop muscle strains. In cooking and science, straining separates a solid from a liquid, like pasta from water; this is filtering. In stories, characters «strain to hear» faint sounds. In science, a force puts strain on a bridge or rope. Phrases: «strain your eyes», «under strain», «strain to hear».
