### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah it usually means the two tablets of the Ten Commandments, which witness to the covenant between God and Israel; "the ark of the testimony" held them. In the Psalms "testimonies" means God's commands and teachings, which the psalmist loves and keeps. Interpretation: Tradition teaches that the tablets were the proof of the covenant, and the Ark holding them was the holiest object in the Tabernacle. Psalm 119 is read as praising the whole Torah as God's witness to how people should live. In the primary lessons: In law and detective stories: witnesses give testimony in court and promise to tell the truth. In everyday and formal writing: «a testimony to» = a sign that proves something. In church life: people may share their testimony at a service. Phrases: «give testimony», «a testimony to», «witness testimony».
