### sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah it means to bear fruit or produce a crop, as the land does when Israel keeps the commands. The Psalms use it for the earth giving its increase, as a sign of God's blessing. Interpretation: The land's yield is tied to keeping the covenant, and in the sabbatical year God promises enough produce. The "yield of the moons" is read as the fruit of each month. In the primary lessons: In road safety lessons in the USA and Canada a yield sign means slow down and let others go first; in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand the same idea is give way. In science and farming, yield is how much a crop or experiment gives. In stories an enemy may refuse to yield. Phrases: yield to, yield sign, a good yield, yield results.

### note

Regular verb: yielded. Spelling trap: i before e — y-i-e-l-d. In the UK and Australia road signs say Give Way, while in the USA they say Yield. In maths problems, yield usually means how much is produced, so multiply the yield of one by the number of things.
