# friction

«friction» in Mova's mysticism dictionary: **a force that slows things down or stops them when two…** — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples, with 5 sentences of Mova's corpora that use it.

### part of speech

noun (friction — uncountable)

### meaning for a pupil

1) Friction is a force that slows things down or stops them when two surfaces rub or slide against each other. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#m1)

2) Friction can mean disagreement or arguing between people. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#m2)

### sense in the lessons

In the mystic school: In note 02 friction is the useful resistance that sharpens a thought, and a mistake is useful "if it changes the next attempt". In the primary lessons: In science, friction acts against movement: rough surfaces like sandpaper and carpet make more friction, smooth or icy surfaces make less. Friction makes heat, which is why rubbing hands warms them. It is useful: shoe grips and bike brakes use friction to stop us slipping; but it also wears things out, so oil and wheels reduce it. In safety, ice and wet floors have little friction, so we slip. In everyday life, «friction between them» means they don't get on.

### examples

- The useful middle is resistance with purpose: enough friction to sharpen a thought, not enough to stop it. (note 02) [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x1)
- Use resistance well, separate confidence from certainty, prefer reality over elegance ("forgot" often beats "a deep systemic failure"), and learn from friction without performing shame or humility. (lesson 003) [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x2)
- The note says agreement is not always help, and opposition is not always help either; the useful middle is resistance with purpose — enough friction to sharpen a thought, not enough to stop it. (lesson 003) [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x3)
- Friction stops your shoes slipping on the floor. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x4)
- Rub your hands together; friction makes them warm. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x5)
- Ice has very little friction, so it's slippery. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x6)
- Brakes use friction to slow a bike down. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x7)
- The toy car went further on the smooth floor because there was less friction. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x8)
- Oil reduces friction in machines. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x9)
- There was some friction between the two teams. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/mysticism/F/friction/#x10)

### note

Uncountable: «friction», not «a friction». Friction always pushes against the direction of movement. More friction = slower. Myth: friction is always bad — it is often useful (walking needs it). Air resistance and water resistance are kinds of friction.
