# adverb

«adverb» in Mova's school dictionary: **a word that tells us more about a verb — how, when, where…** — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples, with 5 sentences of Mova's corpora that use it.

### part of speech

noun (an adverb, adverbs)

### meaning for a pupil

1) An adverb is a word that tells us more about a verb — how, when, where or how often something happens — like «quickly», «yesterday», «here» or «often». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#m1)

2) Adverbs can also describe adjectives or other adverbs: «very tall», «really slowly». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#m2)

### sense in the lessons

In English grammar lessons pupils find adverbs, use them to make writing more precise and learn that many adverbs end in «-ly» (quick, quickly; happy, happily). Phrases: «adverb of manner» (how: slowly), «adverb of time» (when: soon), «adverb of place» (where: outside), «adverb of frequency» (how often: always, never), «fronted adverbial». In stories, adverbs like «suddenly» and «silently» build tension.

### examples

- «Quickly» is an adverb in «She ran quickly». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#x1)
- Add an adverb to show how the giant walked: «heavily». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#x2)
- «Yesterday» is an adverb of time. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#x3)
- «Very» is an adverb in «very cold». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#x4)
- Many adverbs end in «-ly». [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#x5)

- «Always» and «never» are adverbs of frequency. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/adverb/#x7)

### note

Plural «adverbs»; «an adverb». Not every «-ly» word is an adverb: «friendly», «lovely», «lonely» are adjectives. Not every adverb ends in «-ly»: «fast», «well», «soon», «here». Trap: «good» is an adjective, «well» is the adverb — say «she sings well», not «she sings good».
